Port of Rawson: Historic Shrimp Catches in the 2024/2025 Season

A record of over 100,000 tons in Chubut waters boosts activity, but oversupply and low international prices raise questions about the business's profitability.

Chubut - The Port of Rawson was the protagonist of a shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) season with unprecedented figures. During the 2024/2025 season, more than 100,000 tons were caught in provincial waters of Chubut, setting a historical record for the fishery in that jurisdiction. This achievement, however, did not necessarily translate into significant economic growth due to the combination of high operating costs and a retraction in international prices caused by market oversupply.

Start of the New Season and Expectations

The entire fishing industry of Chubut is awaiting the results of the three-day biological survey, which concludes tomorrow, Friday. This information is crucial for the application authority to define whether the parameters are met to enable the commercial season and the entry of the entire fleet. As reported by Nelson Saldivia for Revista Puerto, the new season could begin this Saturday.

Figures from the Record Season

The previous season extended from November 3, 2024, to March 14, 2025. A notable point was that operations proceeded throughout the season without any labor conflict, allowing the production chain to work normally and surpass the mark of one hundred thousand tons. This framework of harmony ensured intense work for stevedoring, logistics, processing plants, and related fishing activities in Puerto Rawson.

Below is a review of the landing figures at the port:

• November 2024: The season kicked off with 25,060 tons of shrimp. The start was earlier than the previous year, and the northern area, off Rawson and towards the Nuevo Gulf, showed large concentrations of very good commercial size and quality shrimp.

• December 2024: The yellow and artisanal fleet reached 22,871 tons, a decrease compared to the 29,447 tons recorded in the same month of 2023.

• January 2025: The port of Rawson registered the best month of the season with 28,048 tons landed.

• February 2025: The Chubut fleet caught 23,323 tons.

• March 2025: In the final two weeks of operations, 4,562 tons were recorded.

The total sum climbed above 100,000 tons, confirming the record.

Questions for the New Season

Economic challenges persist. The sector reiterates that the record catches did not translate into an economic boom due to the aforementioned combination of high costs and depressed international prices.

Now, the industry faces several questions: Will it be possible to match the catch record if the resource remains abundant? And, more importantly, will it be commercially viable to fish large volumes if, conversely, prices continue to fall? These doubts will be resolved as the coming months unfold.
