The 2001 "White Tide": A Netflix Documentary Revives the True Story of the Drug Shipment That Changed Life in the Azores

The maxim that reality often surpasses fiction is well known. However, there are events so absolutely outlandish that it is difficult to believe they do not necessarily belong to the realm of artistic creation. One of these is portrayed in "White Tide: The Surreal Story of Rabo de Peixe", the new Netflix documentary that will soon be on everyone's lips.

This production, directed by João Marques, landed on the platform last October 17 and dissects the real details of the cocaine shipment that appeared scattered across the Azores more than two decades ago. The documentary delves into the events that took place in the Portuguese village of Rabo de Peixe, when, in June 2001, a Sun Kiss 47 sailboat, 14 meters long, wrecked on the coast.

The sailboat was transporting 505.840 kilograms of cocaine with a purity greater than 80%, valued at about 40 million euros, according to a report by Macarena Lozano and Rebeca Queimaliños published in the magazine Icon in December 2017.

This is how the approximately 7,500 inhabitants of Rabo de Peixe —a place, until then, peaceful and routine— saw their lives changed forever in the most violent way. As the Netflix statement recounts, "The arrival of this maximum purity drug transformed the lives of a community that, until then, had no contact with this substance, unleashing a wave of addiction and triggering a complex police investigation."
