Stormy Winds Disrupt Fishing on Norway’s Blue Whiting Grounds as Fleet Waits for Calmer Seas

Harsh weather in the Norwegian Sea slowed fishing operations last week, but vessels are expected to resume activity soon as conditions improve.

Strong west winds reaching storm strength over the blue whiting fishing grounds in the Norwegian Sea disrupted fisheries along Norway’s western waters during the latter half of the week, limiting activity for several vessels.

Blue Whiting Landings Continue Despite Rough Conditions

Despite challenging weather, the fishing fleet reported substantial catches of blue whiting during the week.

A total of 3,040 tons were delivered for human consumption, while an additional 7,340 tons were processed for fishmeal and fish oil, bringing the weekly total to 10,380 tons.

So far this season, fishermen have landed 172,259 tons of blue whiting from the total quota of 238,736 tons, meaning a large portion of the allowable catch has already been harvested.

At present, six vessels remain west in the open sea, waiting for calmer weather before resuming operations. With improved conditions expected in the coming days, industry observers anticipate more catches during the upcoming week.

However, several pelagic trawlers are likely to postpone their blue whiting efforts until the “edge fishery” (“kantafiske”) begins later in spring and summer, when fishing often takes place along the continental shelf edge.

Horse Mackerel Catches Reported from Western Norway

In addition to blue whiting, fishermen also recorded two notable catches of horse mackerel during the week.

  • The vessel Kaspar reported 15 tons of horse mackerel on Tuesday, caught off Rogaland, with an average fish size of 470 grams.

  • Later in the week, Elias landed 11 tons of horse mackerel on Thursday, caught in Vestland waters and delivered to Global Florø.

So far this year, the smaller coastal fleet operating along the western Norwegian coast has caught 666 tons of horse mackerel, signaling a steady start to the season for the species.
