Good North Sea Herring Fishing, but Still Too Small for Human Consumption

North Sea Herring (Clupea harengus)

We had the best herring week of the summer with a whopping 31,800 tonnes in the registration journal. This quantity was fished by 47 different boats, where catches varied from a minimum of 45 tonnes to the largest catch of 1,500 tonnes.

The week's volume is distributed with 26,400 tonnes sold for fishmeal/oil and 5,400 tonnes for human consumption. The main reason why the majority goes to grinding is that the sizes are not suitable for the consumer industry. When the fishing dwindled sharply further north, where there was larger herring, good quantities of herring were encountered further south.

Here, the average weight was in the range of 108–130 grams, with an average of 117 grams for catches destined for fishmeal/oil. Based on length measurements from the Coast Guard, it lies in the range of 22.5–24.3 cm, well above the minimum size of 20 cm.

Catches for human consumption have an average weight from 121 grams at the lowest to 168 grams at the highest, with a weighted average of 139 grams. With the lowest average, it is challenging both in terms of maintaining quality and for the buyer to be able to utilize the herring.

The main fishery in the Norwegian zone has been in the area from Allèbanken and further south to Patchbanken. This is from west of Bømlo to west of Karmøy. Only 300 tonnes were fished north of the 60th parallel, where the fishery took place earlier in the season. From the British zone, we have two catches totaling 500 tonnes, where the sizes of the herring are in the range of 129–139 grams.

With last week's volume, the quota is being used up quickly. 60,100 tonnes have now been fished out of the total quota of over 94,000 tonnes. Many boats have taken their allocated quotas. And since most have fished everything in the Norwegian zone, there is now a basis for adjusting upward the share in the British zone for those who still have quota remaining.

On Sunday, there was a gale on the herring field with few boats out, but we expect more will head out when the north wind calms down. The hope is that herring can be found further north that is larger and better suited for human consumption.

Mackerel (Scomber scombrus)

We had a significantly lower mackerel volume last week with 78 tonnes reported. The week before we had 128 tonnes.

This week as well, Rogaland stands out as the best area for mackerel fishing. Here, 52 tonnes have been reported from five different municipalities, where Strand and Vindafjord are the two best with 16.5 tonnes. Further north, Vanylven is the municipality with the most mackerel with 8.5 tonnes.

The sizes of the mackerel range from 260 grams to 450 grams, with an average of 369 grams. There is good demand for mackerel, and the catches are traded both for freezing and for the fresh market at home and abroad.

For mackerel in the north, we do not have any registrations yet. Normally, this fishery begins around this time. Several boats from the south are on their way north for this fishery, and more will sail within a few days. In the north, there are also boats that are ready if the mackerel appears. It is expected that at least 12–15 boats will focus on mackerel fishing in the north.

Blue Whiting (Micromesistius poutassou)

From five different boats, we received reports of 4,200 tonnes of blue whiting. Four of these have fished in "Kanten" (the edge) in the area from west of Karmøy and south to west of Jæren. Several of these fish blue whiting in combination with whitefish.

"Steinevik" fished blue whiting in the Norwegian part of the Norwegian Sea, around 175 nautical miles northwest of Ålesund. They fished just under 2,000 tonnes in less than five days, which is a very viable fishery.

On "Kanten," several of the traditional boats will continue to fish going forward.

Clarification Note: The term "Kanten" (or "Eggakanten"), mentioned in the Blue Whiting section, refers to the Norwegian Continental Shelf break, a key oceanographic zone where the continental shelf slopes down into the deep sea, known for its high biological productivity and fishing activity.

Martine Korsøen

(Clupea harengus)

(Scomber scombrus)

(Micromesistius poutassou)

Martine Korsøen

(Clupea harengus

(Scomber scombrus

(Micromesistius poutassou
