AAFA is non-profit corporation formed to represent American "Pole & Troll" commercial fishing vessels engaged in the harvest of tuna. The board of directors believes that by promoting the environmental benefits of the "pol and troll" fisheries and promoting the health benefits of tuna consumption that the economic viability of "pole & troll" fisheries can be sustained. The AAFA tuna fishery is small, family-run fishery. The fish are caught using the pole and troll techniques (and the troll techniques in the south Pacific) and its members pride themselves on the care they take to protect the marine environment. Skipper "Bandini" Webster explains: "Tuna Fishermen who are left love the ocean: you've got to love it because it's because it's real hard work. Being certified certified sustainable is important to us. Fishermen who are doing the right thing should prove that they are and talk about it. That's what this certification is all about."
This certification will help to change the current condition in the market by empowering the fishermen. The MSC Certification opens doors to new markets that will help to secure stability for the fishermen. This certification brings new value to the method, and sheds light on the superior quality and health benefits of Pole & Troll Caught Albacore.
