The Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association Ltd (SPFA) has been a steadfast advocate for the Scottish pelagic fishing fleet since 1932, working tirelessly to promote and protect its interests on both national and international stages. As a leading voice for Scotland’s pelagic sector, the SPFA ensures that the fleet remains at the forefront of European pelagic fishing, combining cutting-edge practices with a commitment to sustainability and responsible fisheries management.
At the core of the SPFA’s mission is its representation of 22 member vessels, representing their interests in political forums and fisheries management discussions. The Association is dedicated to securing a sustainable and prosperous future for pelagic fisheries, working to balance economic viability with environmental stewardship. Its membership is organised across three key branches located in Fraserburgh, Peterhead, and Shetland, reflecting the geographic heartlands of Scotland’s pelagic industry.
The Scottish pelagic fleet focuses on some of the most valuable and significant fisheries in the North Atlantic, including North-East Atlantic mackerel, North Sea herring, West of Scotland herring, Atlanto-Scandian herring, and Northern blue whiting. These fisheries are essential not only for the livelihoods of fishermen but also for Scotland’s seafood industry and export economy.
