Alaska's Salmon Harvest Surges, Led by Robust Bristol Bay Sockeye Run

Alaska's 2025 commercial salmon season is significantly outpacing last year, with nearly 30 million fish caught so far. This strong performance is predominantly driven by an exceptional sockeye harvest in Bristol Bay, up 59% from 2024.

JUNEAU, Alaska – Alaska's 2025 salmon harvest is off to a promising start, with commercial fisheries reporting a total catch of just under 30 million salmon to date. This figure already represents 14% of the pre-season forecast and significantly outpaces the harvest levels seen at this point in 2024.

The impressive early season numbers are largely due to a robust sockeye salmon run in Bristol Bay. The region's sockeye harvest is up a remarkable 59% compared to the same period last year, accounting for more than three-quarters of all salmon caught statewide across all species. While the Bristol Bay sockeye harvest typically peaks around mid-July (Statistical Week 28), last year saw an earlier peak in Week 27.

Outside of Bristol Bay, sockeye harvests have generally been lower, with the exception of Cook Inlet. Prince William Sound, for instance, has seen its sockeye harvest down by 73%. However, there are positive signs in other species, with Prince William Sound's keta (chum) salmon catch currently four times higher than its 2024 harvest to date.

Harvests of other salmon species, including pink and coho, are currently lower compared to 2024. However, these runs are still in their early stages, and their catch numbers are expected to rise as the season progresses.

Further details on average fish weights in key fisheries will be released later in the season as data becomes available.
