ASMI: 2025 Weekly Alaska Salmon Harvest Update #6
(UNITED STATES, 7/23/2025)
2025 Alaska Salmon Season: Harvest Reaches 34% of Annual Projection
Alaska's salmon fishery surpasses 72 million fish, with Bristol Bay sockeye activity beginning to wind down. Keta catches show a decline, while coho looks promising

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska's 2025 commercial salmon fishing season has reached 34% of its annual projection, with a total harvest exceeding 72 million fish. This update comes in the sixth weekly report of the season.

The Bristol Bay sockeye fishery, currently accounting for 55% of the statewide salmon harvest, is beginning to slow down. After two consecutive weeks of over 12 million fish harvested, statistical week 29 saw a decrease to approximately 4 million fish.

On the other hand, the statewide keta harvest shows a 24% decline compared to 2024. Despite increases in Prince William Sound, these haven't offset drops in Southeast Alaska, historically the region with the highest keta production. Early indicators suggest a significant decline in both hatchery terminal seine and gillnet harvests.

On a more optimistic note, early coho harvest looks promising across nearly all regions. While coho catches typically peak in statistical week 36, current harvests are in line with the five-year average and 5% above 2024 levels. Combined, the Alaska Peninsula and Prince William Sound account for about 68% of coho harvests, although historically Southeast has been the largest producer over the complete season.
As the season progresses, more data on average fish weights, a key factor in determining total harvest volume, is expected to become available.
