IIN BRIEF - Peru’s anchovy quota is nearly half fulfilled, but El Niño begins to affect subsequent fishing

PERU
Monday, December 04, 2023

Peru is one month into its second anchovy fishing season. As of November 20, a total of 802,346 tons had been caught in the central and northern regions, accounting for 48% of the total quota (1.68 million tons). Industry insiders remain cautiously optimistic about the remaining 52% quota.

Only 27 days into the fishing season, a warm "Kelvin wave" appeared in the fishing area, affecting the normal operations of fishing vessels.

The Peruvian National Marine and Hydrological Service (ENFEN) stated that the intensity of El Niño events has decreased recently, but it still has a certain impact. As summer approaches, changing ocean conditions are causing industry insiders to worry about remaining quotas. In addition to the Kelvin wave problem, rising seawater salinity in Peruvian waters has also slowed down fishing progress.

In Peru, fishmeal prices remain relatively high, while fish oil prices, which had hit record highs earlier this year, edged further higher due to low production. Currently, the price of CIF China's special-grade fishmeal is US$2,150/ton, the asking price of high-quality fishmeal is US$2,100/ton, and the price of standard-grade fishmeal is US$1,820/ton. Fish oil prices have reached new highs, with recent trade prices at $9,600/ton.

IN BRIEF - Spanish Sardine Fishing Ends with Highest Catch in Recent Years

SPAIN
Monday, December 04, 2023

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food has announced the closure of the sardine fishing campaign, effective from 00:00, Friday 01 December 2023, for the purse seine fleet in the Gulf of Cadiz and the Northwest Cantabrian fleets using highly selective sardine-directed gear, such as “racú” and “piobardeira.” The campaign concludes with a final quota of 22,582 tonnes, the highest in recent years.

Utilising, for the first time, an optimisation mechanism, the fleet was allowed to fish until the last authorised day. The Xeito fleet can continue fishing against its quota until exhaustion, following the provisions of Order APM/605/2018, of June 1, which establishes a management and recovery plan for sardines in the Iberian waters (8c and 9a) of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.

The entire sardine-dedicated fleet successfully completed the authorised fishing period, thanks to the optimisation mechanism implemented since October 15. This mechanism maximised efficiency in quota utilisation by distributing the remaining unconsumed quotas to the entire fleet.[...]

IN BRIEF - Japan aims to expand catch quotas for Pacific bluefin tuna

JAPAN
Sunday, December 03, 2023

Japan aims to expand its catch quotas for large Pacific bluefin tuna next season. The Fisheries Agency has presented its draft to raise limits for domestic fishers.

The agency seeks to increase the quota for offshore fishing by 9 percent from the current season, which would bring the total to just over 4,820 tons. The quota for coastal fishing is seen rising slightly to 1,745 tons.

Delegates at an international conference in July agreed to raise the catch limit for Pacific bluefin tuna weighing 30 kilograms or more, and reduce it for smaller ones.

Conference members will discuss the proposal when they gather next month.

The Fisheries Agency will then officially decide on its distribution plan based on the outcome of the meeting.

IN BRIEF - A very interesting market for fresh Norwegian salmon

VIET NAM
Friday, December 01, 2023

A very interesting market for fresh Norwegian salmon This is the conclusion of the new salmon report that the Seafood Council has commissioned in Vietnam.

This is the conclusion of the new salmon report that the Seafood Council has had carried out in Vietnam.

Over several years, Norway has exported salmon by-products to the Vietnamese market. But it is especially the fresh salmon that is interesting, because it is sold at a much higher price.

The consumption of fresh salmon is increasing: Today, the Vietnamese eat 33 percent more fresh salmon than they did five years ago.

In Vietnam, many other things are also growing: the population (which has surpassed 100 million), purchasing power, seafood consumption (which has increased from 20-34 kilos in six years), the total seafood imports and the import of Norwegian salmon.

The Vietnamese eat around 6,500 tonnes of fresh salmon a year. It may not be that much when you take the population into account. Still, it's a good deal when you know that 10 years ago almost no one did it. In addition, most of the salmon originates from Norway.[...]
