Seafood Sector Drives Growth with a 19.5% Increase, Highlighted by a 69% Surge in Japanese Amberjack Shipments to the United States and South Korea

TOKYO — The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) reported on August 4, 2026, that the total export value of agricultural, forestry, fishery, and food products reached 897.7 billion JPY (approximately US$ 5.7 billion) during the January–June 2026 period, achieving a record high for the first half of the year for the second consecutive year.

The dynamic performance of Japanese foreign trade stems from expanding demand in key North American and Asian markets, backed by the recovery of international distribution channels, the global boom in Japanese cuisine, and market diversification following trade restrictions imposed in recent years within the Asian region.

Seafood Sector Leads Sectoral Expansion

Export sales of seafood products established themselves as the main driver of this overall growth, recording a 19.5% year-on-year surge to reach 238.4 billion JPY (around US$ 1.52 billion), compared to 199.4 billion JPY recorded in the first half of the previous year.

The standout star product of the fisheries complex was the Japanese amberjack (Seriola quinqueradiata, locally referred to as Buri in its adult stage and Hamachi in its juvenile phase). Exports of this species rose by 69.0% to hit 43.4 billion JPY (approximately US$ 276 million), representing a net increase of 17.8 billion JPY in just six months.

Main Destinations and Macroeconomic Outlook

Regarding the geographic breakdown of total sector exports, the United States ranked as Japan’s top commercial market, posting a 15.3% growth to reach 162.6 billion JPY (around US$ 1.03 billion). Hong Kong and China secured second and third places, respectively, with expansion registered across all of the archipelago's top ten export markets.

The Government of Japan maintains its strategic target of pushing annual agricultural, food, and seafood exports to 5 trillion JPY by 2030, supported by opening new retail and foodservice channels in both emerging and established markets.
