Fishermen estimate that the stock enjoys excellent health while the first landings are recorded in the northern fish markets

The 'bonito del norte', albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) season, has officially kicked off in the North Atlantic Ocean with very optimistic prospects regarding the abundance of the resource, despite some caution over the initial distance of the fish and thermal anomalies in the sea. Although the first boats have had to travel to distant waters to find specimens, the sector is confident that the species will enter the Cantabrian Sea during the second half of June, attracted by the anchovy, its main food source.

This optimism is backed by biological data. The president of the Federation of Fishermen's Guilds of Cantabria, Sergio Valle, is optimistic about the bonito del norte coastal campaign: as he explains in statements to RNE, there is fish in abundance, so much so that the quota of 28.7 million kilograms –higher than last year's– will not be fully completed because there are not enough boats to reach that level of catches.

"It's a lot of fishing," Valle recognizes, for a fleet that is increasingly smaller. Therefore, he asks "that people do not get alarmed" if not even half of the quota is consumed: "There is nothing to suggest that it is not going to be a good campaign, like last year's," he assures

Valle attributes the health of the biomass to the sustainable practices of the inshore fleet: "It's excellent news that the stock is increasing," Valle maintains. This will allow activity to extend well into autumn, where the trolling or surface trolling fleet will take advantage of June and July to carry out their campaign, while live bait boats will remain until October. However, the sector is closely monitoring the weather: the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has warned that the Bay of Biscay is experiencing extremely high temperatures, reaching up to 6 °C above its normal values, which could alter the migratory behavior of the fish.

Commercial milestone and the first landings of the season

In the commercial sphere, the organization Kofradia Basque Seafood (KBS) —an entity born from the commitment of the inshore producers' associations of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa together with the Basque Government— has marked a milestone by purchasing the first ten specimens of the 2026 season. This transaction represents its first commercial operation since its official presentation in April, directly activating a vertical management model that encompasses the acquisition, cutting, and sale of catches.

The first landing took place last Wednesday, May 27, around 20:00 hours, at the fish market in Burela (Lugo). The fishing vessel Gure Fátima, an inshore boat based in Bermeo, was responsible for registering this first entry after catching one by one, using the traditional trolling method, a total of 2,100 kilograms of bonito del norte, in addition to a complementary catch of between 480 and 600 kilograms of bigeye tuna.

The director general of Kofradia Basque Seafood, Jorge Hernando, highlighted the significance of this move, noting that “this first operation materializes the model change that we are driving.” According to the executive, the company assumes a transversal role by integrating the fleet's catch, technological transformation in its plants, and direct distribution. Hernando concluded that the fact of “supplying the first bonito del norte of the coastal campaign to the restaurant channel as well as to fishmongers and new consumers confirms that the added value can be consolidated at the origin itself.”
