Fishing vessels capture the tuna a few miles off Cabo de Peñas, stabilizing prices and benefiting the entire commercial chain due to the abundance and quality of the product.

The Rula de Avilés fish market has already exceeded 500,000 kilos of north bonito (Thunnus alalunga) commercialized since the start of the season, which began with the first sale on June 1, according to data closed after the auction held last Friday. This year's campaign, qualified as late but in frank recovery, has recorded a strong momentum in recent days.

"The bonito season this year started later than other years. It began with few catches, but these are picking up throughout these days. It has been a good week," assessed Ángel Muñoz, manager of Nueva Rula de Avilés.

The milestone of half a million kilos was consolidated after an intense session in which 100,000 kilos of tuna were auctioned in a single day. Of that amount, 70,000 kilos were unloaded by the vessel 'Itsas Lagunak', whose crew dedicated from 8:15 until 17:00 hours to unloading tasks. The remaining 30,000 kilos arrived aboard the vessels 'Meteoro Tercero', 'Amuka', 'Ostarte', and 'Playa Luanco', which have been fishing in waters of the Cantabrian Sea, a few miles north of Cabo de Peñas.

The proximity of the fishing grounds is boosting the activity of the fleet, and a new auction is already scheduled for next Monday. This abundance has allowed the price per kilo to stabilize on the counters, contrasting notably with the start of the season, when the first bin of the campaign reached a record price of 398 euros per kilo —well above the 120 euros set the previous year—. Those first catches, commercialized by the boats 'Goinkale' and 'María Digna Dos' and acquired by the Alimerka supermarket chain, took place in the vicinity of the Azores, which implied a high effort in days of navigation and operating costs.

"These are being good days for both fishermen and the fish market, buyers and the final consumer, who is the one who will enjoy this product of such good quality these days," noted the manager, highlighting the benefits of the current campaign for all links in the sector.

In parallel with the development of fishing activity, the Unión de Comerciantes de Avilés y Comarca (UCAYC) keeps the 'Verano bonito' campaign active. This initiative seeks to promote the consumption of this marine resource beyond homes, encouraging its inclusion in the menus and cards of hospitality establishments in the region during the months of July, August, and part of September.
