The abundance of recruits estimated in the April campaign was the second highest since 2000, recording 52,469 tons and 245 million individuals, although with a confidence interval that reflects high variability in catches

Researchers from the Cephalopod Fisheries Program of the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) carried out a research campaign aboard the vessel “Víctor Angelescu” between April 7 and May 1, 2026. The main objective of the scientific cruise was to estimate the abundance and analyze the population structure of recruits of the Buenos Aires-north Patagonian stock (SBNP) of the Argentine squid (Illex argentinus) north of parallel 44° South.

The results of this technical monitoring were consolidated in Technical Report 18/2026, prepared by scientists Nicolás Prandoni, Tomás Tapia Montagna, Alejandro Pappi, and Marcela Ivanovic. This assessment is part of the program's annual planning, which since 1996 has included autumn campaigns focused on this biological stock.

Results of the April research campaign

“The estimated abundance of the Buenos Aires-north Patagonian stock of Argentine squid (SBNP) was 52,469 tons and 245 million individuals,” detailed INIDEP researchers. This figure represents the second-highest estimate in the historical series recorded since 2000. However, the statistical variability of the catches yielded Confidence Interval (95%) values higher than 94%, which reduces the mathematical reliability of the absolute abundance index.

When consulted by Revista Puerto, researcher Nicolás Prandoni explained the technical meaning of this statistical indicator:

“The confidence interval evaluates how reliable the calculated abundance index is. There are years when it is very high, and that indicates the value is not as good, but it must be reported anyway. In years when it is very patchy, sometimes that interval is higher.”

The report reveals that the Buenos Aires-north Patagonian stock was detected in practically the entire research area, representing about 80% of the total catch obtained during the campaign. The scientists emphasized the biological relevance of these studies:

“The estimation of recruitment at the start of the fishing season is essential to carry out the weekly monitoring of the cohort during said season, in order to satisfy the management objective: to ensure a sufficient escape of spawners that allows for successful recruitment the following year.”

The commercial harvest in the Northern Management Unit concluded early on April 22, 2026, due to a sharp decline in yields from the commercial fleet operating in that area.

Biological parameters and sampling methodology

The research covered an estimated area of 42,300 square nautical miles (nm²) on the outer shelf and continental slope, between paralells 37° S and 44° S, covering a depth range of 100 to 500 meters. In total, ten cruises were completed during April 2026, constituting the eleventh historical campaign of this particular series.

BIPO 'Víctor Angelescu' INIDEP

The methodological design used for the evaluation of Illex argentinus consisted of a randomized stratified sampling, carrying out 77 fishing trawls with bottom trawl nets. The relative abundances recorded ranged between 0.01 and 23.22 tons per square nautical mile.

“The highest values were found on the outer shelf, between 100 and 200 m depth, without a clear latitudinal pattern,” the researchers detailed in their report.

The biological sampling consisted of extracting a total of 3,889 specimens (with a maximum of 150 specimens per fishing trawl). For each specimen, key technical variables were determined:

  • Mantle length (ML) measured to the lower millimeter.

  • Total weight (TW) expressed in grams.

  • Sex (S).

  • Maturity stage (MS).

The commercial sample was composed of specimens with mantle lengths between 180 and 346 mm (averaging a mean ML of 229 mm and a mean TW of 268 g). Regarding sexual maturity, males were mostly in incipient or advanced maturity, while females were in immature and maturing stages.

Fishery status report as of April 6 (Week 14)

Prior to the start of the oceanographic campaign on the vessel “Víctor Angelescu”, INIDEP had issued a detailed balance sheet on the development of the commercial fishery of Illex argentinus from January 2 to April 6, 2026 (week 14). The analysis included effort, catches, and the operating area of the Argentine jigger fleet, as well as data on vessels operating outside the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and within the area in dispute with the United Kingdom.

The processing of weekly fishing reports from 83 jigger vessels—which completed 313 trips and 5,499 fishing days—yielded an accumulated catch of 147,152 tons, recording a daily average of 27 tons per day. This accumulated catch volume stands as the highest in the historical series since 2000.

The temporal dynamics of the commercial fleet during the beginning of autumn showed marked regional variations:

  • In March, 80 vessels captured 23,576 tons south of parallel 44° S (average of 13.2 daily tons). 73% of that volume was concentrated on the outer shelf in statistical rectangles 4459 and 4460 (17,626 tons with 19.4 daily tons).

  • In April, the remaining fleet south of parallel 44° S dropped to 32 jiggers, and the fishing yield experienced a sharp decline, accumulating only 1,676 tons (average of 2.5 daily tons).

  • For its part, the trawler fleet reported an accumulated total of 27,585 tons of squid, of which 96% came from catches south of parallel 44° S.

Monitoring of foreign fleets and biological surveying

In the area adjacent to the EEZ, south of parallel 44° S, INIDEP detected the presence of up to 240 foreign jigger vessels per week at the beginning of the year. This number was reduced to 160 units by week 11, concentrating in rectangles 4560 and 4660. In the sector of the EEZ in dispute with the United Kingdom, a maximum of 123 foreign jigger vessels was estimated during week 8, operating south of parallel 49° S. North of 44° S, foreign fleet activity began in week 11, with an estimated 20 vessels positioned in rectangles 4157 and 4258.

Based on biological samples carried out by onboard observers (who processed 153 samples corresponding to 22,502 specimens obtained in seven commercial trips), it was determined that the fleet concentrated in rectangles 4459 and 4460 captured mostly squid in maturity stages I, II, and III (immature to early maturing, especially noticeable in females). These characteristics allowed for the identification of these schools as belonging to the Buenos Aires-north Patagonian stock (SBNP) at the southern limit of its distribution. These specimens showed length ranges between 15 and 35 cm of mantle length (mean ML of 224 mm and mean TW of 228 g).

Finally, the technical report analyzes the results of the surveying north of parallel 44° S, authorized by the Federal Fisheries Council (CFP) through CFP Minute No. 7/2025. The exploration began on March 27, 2026, and lasted for ten days, employing five vessels operating between parallels 41° S and 43° S. Commercial daily catches fluctuated between 0.2 and 31.5 tons, showing a decreasing trend over the days. The average yield decreased from 15.8 tons in March to 8.7 tons in April, accumulating a total catch of 495.1 tons during the surveying phase. The samplings confirmed that 58% of the resource corresponded to maturity stages I, II, and III (immature), with mean sizes consistently exceeding 22 cm of mantle length (maximum of 23.7 cm) and mean weights greater than 200 grams in all fishing trawls.
