Mackerel (Scomber scombrus)

Activity in the Norwegian Sea slowed down considerably last week compared to the week before. Several purse seiners completed their quotas the previous week, while those continuing to search last week found scarce amounts of mackerel (Scomber scombrus). Indications suggest that the fish have migrated further into the UK zone. However, rough weather conditions occurred toward the end of the week, and a few Norwegian and several Faroe Islands vessels are still searching in the Norwegian Sea. It remains to be seen when and where the next major wave of landings will take place.

A total of 32 vessels reported 4,082 tonnes of mackerel from offshore waters last week. Most of this volume came from the Norwegian Sea, northwest of Ålesund. Additionally, approximately 300 tonnes were reported from the North Sea within the Norwegian Economic Zone (EEZ), featuring a slightly smaller size profile. The mackerel from the Norwegian Sea averaged 510 grams, whereas the mackerel caught in the North Sea averaged 363 grams across all catches. The offshore fleet comprised 16 Norwegian, 14 Faroese, 1 Icelandic, and 1 Northern Irish vessel reporting landings last week.

On the coast, fishing remains sluggish with only 150 tonnes logged in the reporting journal, ranging from Volda in the north to Bømlo in the south. This fish ranged between 200 grams and 350 grams, indicating wide size variations.

North Sea Herring (Clupea harengus)

A total of 4,329 tonnes of North Sea herring (Clupea harengus) were reported during the past week. More than half of this volume originated from the Norwegian Economic Zone (EEZ), while the remainder was caught in the UK zone. Substantial fishing took place directly west of Patchbanken in the EEZ, yielding large, high-quality herring weighing between 170 grams and 250 grams. Smaller herring, averaging around 125 grams, was caught in the far south near the border with the Danish zone and directed to meal and oil processing. In total, 3,539 tonnes were landed for human consumption and 790 tonnes for meal/oil. The fleet engaged in this fishery included 17 Norwegian and 3 British vessels.

Norwegian Spring-Spawning Herring - NVG (Clupea harengus)

A total of 11 vessels reported large, fine NVG herring (Clupea harengus) from the Trøndelag coast, specifically between Hitra and Frøya. A combined total of 2,752 tonnes was reported with an overall average weight of 353 grams. All of this volume went to human consumption.

Sprat (Sprattus sprattus)

Coastal: 

The vessel "Kaspar" reported 8 tonnes of fine, large coastal sprat (Sprattus sprattus) from Strand municipality.

Ocean:

The Swedish vessel "Astrid-Marie" reported 900 tonnes of ocean sprat (Sprattus sprattus) on Friday.
