Russian Fishermen Surpass 1.1 Million Tons Since Start of 2024

Russian fishermen have achieved a significant milestone, catching over 1.1 million tons of aquatic bioresources since the beginning of 2024.

According to data from the Federal Agency for Fisheries' industry monitoring system (FSMS), the total catch reached 1,152.2 thousand tons, with notable contributions from various fishing basins across the country.

Breakdown by Region:

• Far Eastern Basin:
  The largest contributor, with 965 thousand tons caught, including:

  • Pollock: 741.9 thousand tons

  • Cod: 32.6 thousand tons

  • Pacific herring: 140.7 thousand tons (a 17.4 thousand ton increase compared to 2024 levels).

• Northern Basin:
  Total catch: 70.3 thousand tons, primarily:

  • Cod: 48.9 thousand tons

  • Haddock: 11.6 thousand tons.

• Western Basin:
  Total catch: 21.1 thousand tons (a 1.2% increase from 2024), including:

  • Sprat: 14.1 thousand tons (up by 0.2 thousand tons)

  • Baltic herring: 6.7 thousand tons (up by 0.4 thousand tons).

• Azov-Black Sea Basin:
  Total catch: 12 thousand tons (a 23.4% increase from 2024), dominated by:

  • Anchovy: 10.9 thousand tons (up by 2.2 thousand tons).

• Volga-Caspian Basin:
  Total catch: 20 thousand tons (a 17.5% increase from 2024), primarily:

  • Sprat: 19.3 thousand tons (up by 4.1 thousand tons).

• International Waters:
  Russian fleets operating in exclusive economic zones of foreign states and the open ocean caught 62.6 thousand tons, marking a 76.9% increase (or 27.2 thousand tons) compared to the same period in 2024.

Investment Quotas Driving Growth

The Russian fishing industry continues to benefit from its investment quota program, aimed at modernizing the fleet and expanding processing capabilities. According to Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries:

• First Stage:

  • 39 out of 106 planned vessels and all 25 fish processing plants have been completed.

• Second Stage (2023 onwards):

  • 1 crab fishing vessel and 2 processing enterprises have already been commissioned.

  • Plans include building 31 vessels, 11 processing plants, and 4 logistics facilities.

The focus on high-value-added products has already shown results, with their share increasing from 15% to 32.5% in recent years. The agency aims to further boost this figure to 50% by 2030, underscoring its commitment to sustainable and value-driven growth in the fishing sector.
