Minister Sergio González Guerrero Closes Deal with Fishermen and Confirms the 559,804 Ton Catch Quota for 2025; Fishery Generates Jobs for 14,000 Fishermen

LIMA — The Peruvian Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) announced that it will authorize five additional trips for pota (giant squid) fishing before the end of 2025. This decision is part of a new adaptive management approach that seeks to balance the fleet's employment needs with the resource's sustainability.

PRODUCE head, Sergio González Guerrero, indicated that an agreement was reached with fishermen who had been engaged in protests, establishing a fishing schedule: two trips in October, one at the end of November, and two in December.

These trips will be subject to constant evaluations, in which the fishermen themselves will actively participate in observation and sampling tasks, supporting the scientific research conducted by the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe).

Dialogue and Scientific Evidence

González Guerrero assured that all ministerial decisions are based on "scientific and technical evidence" provided by Imarpe, an internationally recognized body that establishes quotas, closures, and other measures for sustainable management.

Giant Squid is the second most important fishery in Peru. Its artisanal fleet comprises about 4,000 vessels, involving approximately 14,000 fishermen nationwide, underscoring the socioeconomic relevance of the agreement.

For 2025, the pota catch quota amounts to 559,804 metric tons. As of the end of September, the fleet had already caught 521,198 tons, representing 93% of the total assigned.

The minister also reported on PRODUCE's participation in the Expo Amazónica 2025, which will take place from Thursday, October 2, to Sunday, October 5, in Tarapoto, San Martín region. This event, co-organized with the regional government, will feature more than 500 micro and small enterprises (MYPE) showcasing products like coffee, cocoa, and honey, and will include business matchmaking rounds to boost MYPE growth in national and international markets.
