Total catches reach 486,678 tons in the first half of the year driven by shrimp and hake, compensating for the decline recorded in the squid fishery.

Declared landings by the national fishing fleet reached 486,678 tons during the first half of the year. The figure represents a growth of 8%, according to data from the general system of Pesca de la Dirección Nacional de Coordinación y Fiscalización Pesquera, which tracks the evolution of the activity, as reported by Revista Puerto.

Squid (Illex argentinus) is the main species landed, the result of an abundant but short-lived season, with 188,411 tons, which means 8% less than what was discharged last year, when it totaled 205,427 tons.

The decline in squid is compensated for by better yields shown by other resources such as Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) from the southern stock below 41º S and Argentine red shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri). Between January and June, Argentine hake totaled 136,528 tons, a 17% increase year-on-year.

Since the freezer outrigger fleet started the shrimp season two months earlier than last year, shellfish landings show an exaggerated growth. They total 95,806 tons, which represents 62% more than during the first half of 2025.

The coastal multi-species fishery records landings of 26,000 tons, an 11% decrease compared to last year, while hake from the northern stock contributed 12,000 tons, showing a growth of 68%. Other species such as Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) also exhibit an increase in declared landings: 2,596 tons, a 16% increase compared to last year.

The port of Mar del Plata shows an 18% drop in received landings during the first half of the year, but with 175,000 tons it remains the country's main fishing port. Out of that total, more than 76,000 tons corresponded to Argentine hake from the southern stock. The species experienced a growth of 17% at the Mar del Plata docks.

Shrimp in Mar del Plata accumulated 5,819 tons, representing a growth of 145% in the first half of the year, a result of the flexibilization of management measures that allowed shipowners to land at the local port at the beginning of the season.

Puerto Madryn was able to take advantage of the squid from the summer-spawning stock and currently the shrimp season. It registers 125,000 tons, a 59% increase compared to last year. From the total, 80,000 tons were contributed by squid and 33,000 tons by shrimp.

Among the remaining ports, Puerto Deseado also shows positive indicators. Landings in the Santa Cruz port grew by 46% and totaled nearly 64,000 tons. In Rawson, conversely, they fell by 15%, totaling 47,000 tons.

Caleta Paula also shows positive figures by receiving discharges that did not materialize in Chubut due to the conflict between stevedoring companies and SUPA. It received 25,000 tons, a 27% increase compared to last year.

In the breakdown by fleet type, squid jigger vessels saw a decline of 12%, reaching 156,000 tons. Coastal/deep-sea fresh-fish trawlers and freezer trawlers increased their participation by 22% compared to last year, with 134,000 tons and 76,000 tons respectively. The coastal fleet decreased its contribution by 16% with 50,500 tons.
