The Asian giant leads global demand while squid dominates the sector’s foreign trade

Argentina’s fishery exports reached 105,295 tons worth US$ 348.9 million during the first two months of 2026, according to the economic report prepared by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, under the Ministry of Economy, with data released by Nelson Saldivia of Parte de Pesca.

China, the Main Destination for Fishery Trade

During January and February, China clearly led the ranking of export destinations, purchasing 45,606 tons, equivalent to 43.31% of Argentina’s total exports.

In second place was Spain, with 12,388 tons (11.76%), followed by Thailand, with 4,695 tons (4.46%).

Other key markets included the United States, Peru, Russia, Brazil, Italy, Indonesia, Korea, Canada, France, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom.

Squid Leads Export Volumes

Among exported species, squid (Illex argentinus) stood out as the leading product, totaling 53,975 tons worth US$ 145.1 million, representing year-on-year increases of 24.8% in volume and 25.1% in value.

Shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) recorded exports of 23,899.8 tons worth US$ 169 million, with increases of 18% in volume and 21.5% in value compared to the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) reached 15,569 tons worth US$ 39.4 million, with gains of 13% in volume and 9.2% in value.

Factors Behind China’s Dominance

The strong share held by China is explained by its role as the world’s leading seafood market, as well as its involvement in the sector’s operations, including fleets operating under the Argentine flag.

In the case of squid, this trend is even more pronounced: of the total exported during the first two months, 84.49% was destined for the Chinese market.

Container Terminal Two (TC2) of Mar del Plata

Meanwhile, Spain strengthened its position as the second-largest buyer, driven by demand for shrimp from the fishing season in provincial waters off Rawson, in Chubut.

The start of 2026 confirms China’s central role in Argentina’s fishery trade, in a context where international demand dynamics and catch composition shape export performance.
