Salmon are on the move: sockeye salmon lead the progress of the season in Kamchatka

The head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, Ilya Shestakov, assessed the progress of the salmon run during a working visit to the region, where more than half of the Russian Far East's total volume is projected to be caught.

Pacific salmon in the Russian Far East are key fisheries for the country. Kamchatka, for its part, ranks among the region's leaders in catch volumes and will account for more than half of the projected Far East salmon run in 2026.

According to industry estimates, approximately 227,000 tons of salmon could be caught during this year's run across the entire Far East, more than half of which—approximately 117,400 tons—will be caught in Kamchatka Krai. In the region's main fishing areas, Russian fishermen catch pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), and chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). After several weeks of activity, as of July 1, more than 2,700 tons of salmon have already been recorded as caught in Kamchatka. This season, 94 industrial enterprises, 117 indigenous communities, and 100 fishing grounds are operating in the region for recreational fishing.

Fishing enterprises operate on both the eastern and western coasts, while fishing in the Kamchatka-Kuril and Karaginsky subzones continues to add volumes. In the Petropavlovsk-Komandorsky subzone, fishing is concentrated primarily in Kamchatka Bay and the Kamchatka River basin. The main species caught is sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), which will continue active fishing here until mid-August. On the western coast, high runs of sockeye salmon are expected in the Ozernaya River area.

During a working visit to Kamchatka Krai, Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo), met with Governor Vladimir Solodov and held a meeting of the salmon fishing headquarters. This working group meeting was attended by representatives from the Primorsky and Khabarovsk Krais, Sakhalin and Magadan Oblasts, the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, territorial administrations of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, and subordinate organizations. Visits to several key fishing enterprises are also planned. The main topic of the trip was the discussion of the progress of the salmon run, its key objectives, and prospects.

"Overall, the fishing season has begun as expected—science has predicted it. Kamchatka has been a leader in salmon fishing since Soviet times, and it remains so today. The headquarters' main task is to identify the problems and nuances that exist in organizing the fishing season and jointly develop the necessary solutions," noted Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries.

Within the framework of the season, industry researchers developed a strategy for Pacific salmon fishing in Kamchatka Krai, which was openly discussed at various venues. This year, the key principles that have proven successful in previous years have been maintained. As part of the scientific support for monitoring the run, the Russian Federal Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) conducted a trawl survey and established approximately 100 seasonal observation points. Scientists use a full range of tools to assess salmon runs, ranging from walking patrols to drones, genetic analysis, mathematical models, and elements of artificial intelligence.

Ensuring unimpeded access for salmon to their spawning grounds and preventing illegal fishing remains a key priority for regulatory agencies. To this end, a comprehensive interagency monitoring system has been deployed on the peninsula. Public inspectors, stationary fisheries protection posts, mobile task forces, unmanned aerial systems, and other tools for interaction are involved in the protection of aquatic bioresources within the framework of agreements with fisheries associations and specialized enterprises.

Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, noted the importance of coordinating the efforts of all agencies and regions to ensure stable salmon production in the region.
