Salmon Surge Powers Norway’s Seafood Exports Despite Global Headwinds

Rising demand in Asia and soaring wild fish prices help offset U.S. decline and geopolitical disruptions

Norway’s seafood sector showed resilience in March, posting export revenues of approximately US$1.47 billion (NOK 15.5 billion)—an increase of about US$49.6 million (NOK 522 million), or 3%, compared with the same month last year.

According to Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council, the growth came despite significant external pressures. “Norwegian seafood exports performed well in March, despite the war in the Middle East, a stronger Norwegian krone, and a continued decline in exports to the U.S.,” he said. The gains were largely driven by higher salmon volumes and increased prices for key species including salmon, cod, mackerel, and saithe, alongside strong growth in exports to China.

Year-to-date figures show slight dip

In the first quarter of the year, Norway exported seafood worth roughly US$4.16 billion (NOK 43.8 billion), marking a modest decline of US$42.6 million (NOK 449 million), or 1%, compared with the same period in 2025.

Middle East conflict disrupts logistics

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has posed logistical challenges, particularly for salmon exporters. Increased fuel costs and altered air freight routes have complicated shipments.

Despite this, China emerged as the standout growth market in March, with export values rising by US$52.4 million (NOK 552 million)—a sharp 68% increase year-on-year. Total exports to China reached approximately US$133 million (NOK 1.4 billion).

“The fact that export value increased despite these disruptions highlights both the adaptability of the salmon industry and the strong demand in Asian markets,” Chramer noted.

Asia gains ground as U.S. market weakens

Regional export distribution in March revealed shifting dynamics:

  • Europe: 63% (unchanged)
  • Asia: 23% (+5 percentage points)
  • United States: 9% (–4 percentage points)

Growth in Asia was driven primarily by salmon exports to China, but other markets—including South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan—also recorded strong gains.

Meanwhile, exports to the United States declined for the third consecutive month, dropping by more than US$47.5 million (over NOK 500 million) compared with March last year. Salmon fillets were particularly affected.

“The main reasons are increased tariffs and a weaker U.S. dollar against the Norwegian krone,” Chramer explained, adding that Asian growth has largely compensated for the U.S. downturn.

Stronger krone dampens export value

Currency movements also played a role. The Norwegian krone strengthened by nearly 10% against the U.S. dollar and 3% against the euro compared with March last year.

“This has reduced export values when measured in kroner,” said Chramer. “However, higher prices and increased volumes for species like salmon, haddock, snow crab, and herring have supported overall growth.”

Cod shortages raise industry concerns

The sector continues to face challenges from reduced cod quotas. Cod landings in the first quarter have dropped by more than 50% since 2022, reaching their lowest levels since the early 2000s.

At the same time, high prices are creating uncertainty about whether increased costs can be passed along the value chain.

“This could make the current season a struggle for survival for many in the onshore processing industry,” Chramer warned.

Salmon dominates export performance

Salmon remained the cornerstone of Norway’s seafood exports in March:

  • 106,000 tonnes exported
  • Total value of approximately US$997 million (NOK 10.5 billion)
  • Value increase of US$59 million (NOK 622 million) (+6%)
  • Volume growth of 4%

Exports to the Middle East initially dropped sharply following the outbreak of conflict. However, by the end of March, shipments to countries such as Saudi Arabia and Israel had nearly returned to normal levels, according to seafood analyst Paul T. Aandahl.

Asia drives fresh salmon demand

While exports to some Middle Eastern markets declined significantly—down 13% to Saudi Arabia, 33% to the United Arab Emirates, and 85% to Qatar—Asia more than compensated for the losses.

Fresh whole salmon exports surged:

  • China: +61%
  • Thailand: +37%
  • South Korea: +24%
  • Taiwan: +53%

“This growth is being driven by strong demand for fresh Norwegian salmon, even as prices rise,” Aandahl said.

Trout exports fall

Not all segments performed well. Trout exports declined in March:

  • 5,100 tonnes exported
  • Total value of approximately US$48.6 million (NOK 512 million)
  • Value down US$3.1 million (NOK 33 million) (–6%)
  • Volume down 15%

Despite geopolitical tensions, currency fluctuations, and shifting global demand, Norway’s seafood industry continues to demonstrate resilience—powered largely by the enduring global appetite for its salmon.
