From a modest debut in the 1970s to a globally recognized menu staple, Burger King’s fish sandwich has evolved through decades of reinvention—while keeping one key ingredient at its heart.
For more than 50 years, Burger King and its Australian franchise Hungry Jack’s have served fish sandwiches to customers around the world, making it one of the longest-running items in the fast-food giant’s portfolio. First introduced in 1975, the sandwich was originally known as The Whaler, created to compete directly with McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish.

A Sandwich with a Long and Changing History
The original Whaler sandwich was a simple creation—tartar sauce, lettuce, and a fish filet served on a sesame-seed bun. By 1978, Burger King revamped the sandwich as part of its Specialty Sandwich Line, renaming it the Long Fish Sandwich and serving it on an elongated bun.
Over the years, the sandwich went through several transformations tied closely to Burger King’s chicken offerings. When the company launched the BK Broiler chicken sandwich in 1990, the fish sandwich adopted a panko breadcrumb coating and a new name: the Ocean Catch Fish Sandwich.

Another major change came in 2002, when the sandwich grew in size and was served on a Whopper bun, officially becoming the BK Big Fish. Additional rebrands followed, including the BK Fish, Premium Alaskan Fish Sandwich, and Extra Long Fish Sandwich.
Today, the sandwich is sold as the BK Big Fish in the United States and Canada, while international markets know it as the BK Fish, Fish King, Fish Royale, or BK Fish’n Crisp Burger.

What Fish Does Burger King Actually Use?
At the center of every version is 100% wild-caught Alaska pollock, a fish prized for its mild flavor and flaky texture. The filet is coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs, fried until golden brown, and topped with crunchy lettuce, sweet and creamy tartar sauce, and tangy pickles—a combination designed to deliver both crunch and comfort.

Regional Flavors and Seasonal Specials
While Burger King keeps its fish sandwich lineup relatively small, it does offer localized versions tailored to regional tastes. During Lent, a significant period in the Christian calendar, the company frequently introduces limited-time offers (LTOs) with alternative ingredients to appeal to seasonal demand.
Controversy and Corporate Strategy
Although the sandwich itself has largely avoided controversy, Burger King once faced calls for a boycott after sourcing fish from Icelandic suppliers, due to Iceland’s involvement in whaling, despite the 1982 international moratorium.
Despite being a major menu item, the fish sandwich is rarely featured in Burger King’s core advertising and has surprisingly few global trademarks, signaling a quieter—but enduring—role in the brand’s strategy.

A Quiet Classic That Endures
From The Whaler to the BK Big Fish, Burger King’s fish sandwich has continually adapted to changing tastes, market trends, and branding strategies. Yet after decades of reformulations, one thing remains unchanged: a commitment to wild-caught Alaska pollock and a recipe that has stood the test of time.
