Total Russian Catches Exceed 3.8 Million Tonnes with Strong Growth in Pacific Salmon

The Far Eastern Basin Accounts for Nearly 75% of the Total, Driven by Pollock and a Record Salmon Harvest; Russian Fleet Catches Up in International Waters

MOSCOW — The total catch of aquatic bioresources by all Russian users has surpassed 3.8 million tonnes, reaching a total of 3,802,500 tonnes. According to the industry monitoring system of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo), this figure reflects robust performance, largely driven by the Far East and growth in key species.

The Russian fleet also recorded a significant increase in international waters (Exclusive Economic Zones of foreign states and the open part of the World Ocean), with a production of 412,500 tonnes, which is 7.6% higher than the figure for the corresponding period in 2024.

Breakdown by Fishery Basin

-Far Eastern Basin: 2.9 Million Tonnes

This basin remains the pillar of Russian fishing, accounting for almost three-quarters of the total. The following year-over-year increases compared to 2024 are notable:

• Alaska Pollock: 1,796 thousand tonnes (+63.8 thousand tonnes). Pollock constitutes the largest fishery in Russia and one of the largest globally.

• Pacific Herring: 406.1 thousand tonnes (+77 thousand tonnes).

• Pacific Salmon: 334.4 thousand tonnes (+105.9 thousand tonnes). This year's salmon harvest has been exceptionally strong.

• Pacific Cod: 94.1 thousand tonnes (+2.3 thousand tonnes).

• Far Eastern Flounder: 57.3 thousand tonnes (+1.9 thousand tonnes).

-Northern Basin: 266.5 Thousand Tonnes

The Arctic basin focuses on groundfish species, maintaining stable production:

• Cod: 139.2 thousand tonnes.

• Haddock: 46.7 thousand tonnes (+0.1 thousand tonnes).

-Western Basin: 56.8 Thousand Tonnes

Fishing in the Baltic Sea primarily focuses on smaller pelagic species:

• Sprat (Kilka): 32.2 thousand tonnes (+0.9 thousand tonnes).

• Baltic Herring: 18.8 thousand tonnes.

-Azov-Black Sea Basin: 34.3 Thousand Tonnes

This basin recorded significant growth, with a total increase of +9.2 thousand tonnes:

• Anchovy: 12.6 thousand tonnes (+3.4 thousand tonnes).

-Volga-Caspian Basin: 53.9 Thousand Tonnes

With a total increase of +1 thousand tonnes, this basin remains stable:

• Sprat: 22.6 thousand tonnes (+1.9 thousand tonnes).

• Common fish species: 9.5 thousand tonnes.
