The shrimp season in Rawson reports 24,828 tons, but faces commercial challenges

The shrimp fishing season (Pleoticus muelleri) in the waters of the Chubut province started on November 3rd, and although initially it was difficult to locate the schools of shrimp, the catches have gained momentum.

According to Nelson Saldivia from Parte de Pesca, operations have found their rhythm thanks to the influx of shrimp from national waters, allowing activity throughout the entire authorized area: to the north, south, and off the coast of Puerto Rawson.

Outstanding production and abundant resources

This year, the resource presents exceptional characteristics: hard-shelled shrimp of excellent quality, with sizes L1 and L2 predominating. Both the yellow fleet and the artisanal fleet report good fishing conditions, describing the area as "carpeted with shrimp." In less than 40 days of operations, landings at Puerto Rawson reached 24,828 tons, according to official sources.

The only difficulty for the fleet has been the weather, with several days of interruptions due to adverse weather conditions. However, December and January historically represent the months of highest activity, forecasting a sustained volume of catches.

Commercial difficulties in international markets

Despite the success in catches, the commercialization of shrimp faces significant challenges. International markets remain stagnant, with weak demand keeping prices low. Although high stock levels are recorded, international buyers are unwilling to offer more competitive prices.

Exporting companies confirm the complexity of selling Patagonian wild shrimp at the end of the year. Although record capture numbers are reported, commercial uncertainty persists, putting pressure on the industry to find solutions in an adverse global market.
