Russia’s Total Fish Catch Surpasses 500,000 Tons in Early 2026

Far Eastern Basin Leads as Pollock and Herring Drive Strong Seasonal Performance

According to the latest figures from the industry monitoring system of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo), Russia’s total catch of aquatic bioresources has reached 525.9 thousand tons since the beginning of the year.

Far Eastern Fishery Basin: 472.4 Thousand Tons

The Far Eastern basin remains the backbone of Russia’s fishing industry, accounting for 472.4 thousand tons of the national total.

Pollock Fishing in the Sea of Okhotsk

As part of the 2026 Sea of Okhotsk fishing season (Season “A”), fishermen have harvested nearly 305,000 tons of pollock since January 1. Of this amount, 149,000 tons were caught in the Sea of Okhotsk alone.

Strong performances were recorded in key zones:

  • East Kamchatka zone: 43.8 thousand tons (132.9% of the 2025 level)

  • West Bering Sea zone: 56.7 thousand tons (twice the 2025 level)

The Far Eastern fleet is also actively fishing for Pacific herring in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. Total Pacific herring catches have reached 113.8 thousand tons, including 103.9 thousand tons in the North Okhotsk Sea subzone.

Cod production in the basin stands at 15.4 thousand tons, with 6.1 thousand tons harvested in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Fleet Operations and Logistics

As of February 10, the expedition includes:

  • 63 large-tonnage vessels

  • 10 medium-tonnage vessels

  • 24 transport vessels

  • 32 inspectors overseeing transshipment operations

Refrigeration and transport capacity are fully meeting industry demand. As of February 8, cold storage facilities in Primorsky Krai are operating at 32% capacity. Meanwhile, 21 vessels carrying more than 50,500 tons of fish products are approaching port.

Northern Fishery Basin: 29.2 Thousand Tons

The Northern basin recorded a total catch of 29.2 thousand tons, exceeding 2025 levels by 1.7 thousand tons.

Breakdown by species:

  • Cod: 14.1 thousand tons

  • Haddock: 8.4 thousand tons (up 4.4 thousand tons compared to 2025)

Western Fishery Basin: 8.0 Thousand Tons

In the Western basin, total catches reached 8.0 thousand tons.

Key species include:

  • Sprat (kilka): 5.8 thousand tons (up 0.3 thousand tons year-on-year)

  • Baltic herring (salak): 2.2 thousand tons

Azov–Black Sea Fishery Basin: 4.5 Thousand Tons

The Azov–Black Sea basin reported a total catch of 4.5 thousand tons, almost entirely comprised of:

  • Anchovy: 4.4 thousand tons

Volga–Caspian Fishery Basin: 4.7 Thousand Tons

The Volga–Caspian basin produced 4.7 thousand tons, all of which consisted of:

  • Sprat: 4.7 thousand tons

Operations Beyond Russian Waters

In the exclusive economic zones of foreign states, conventional fishing areas, and the open part of the World Ocean, the Russian fleet harvested approximately 7.1 thousand tons of aquatic bioresources.
