Blue Whiting Fishery Underway in International Waters – NVG Herring Moving South West of Lofoten

Strong activity in the Atlantic despite rough weather, while spawning season approaches for Norwegian spring-spawning herring

Blue Whiting

The 2026 blue whiting fishery is now fully underway in international waters. This fishery, which began in the late 1970s, has produced decades of fishing stories — long voyages far west in the Atlantic Ocean, harsh weather conditions, and enormous catches of this species that is so important to Norwegian fishermen.

Last week’s reported landings:

  • 34,700 tonnes of blue whiting for fishmeal and oil

  • 7,049 tonnes of blue whiting for human consumption

  • 25 vessels active during the week

Fishing activity has been variable, with periods of poor weather. Over the weekend in particular, strong westerly winds created difficult conditions. Good fishing activity is expected in the coming weeks in areas west of Ireland.

Norwegian Spring-Spawning (NVG) Herring

Seven vessels targeted what is often called the ocean’s silver last week.

Reported landings:

  • 3,860 tonnes of NVG herring

  • Fishing grounds from northwest of Andøya down to west of Lofoten

  • Fish size ranging from 230 to 293 grams

  • Roe content between 18–19%

With roe levels at this stage, it is estimated that spawning will begin in approximately one week.

Horse Mackerel

A total of 40 tonnes of horse mackerel was reported last week.

  • 2 vessels reported catches from Rogaland

  • Fish size ranged from 450 to 600 grams

North Sea Herring

One vessel reported:

  • 7 tonnes of North Sea herring

  • Average size of 270 grams

  • Landed from Rogaland

Pelagic fisheries are clearly in full swing. Despite challenging weather conditions at times, activity remains strong both in the international blue whiting grounds and along the Norwegian coast, where the NVG herring continues its southern migration west of Lofoten.
