Exports show sharp contrasts in January as king crab struggles, snow crab surges, and prawn volumes fall amid supply constraints and tariff uncertainty.

Challenging January for King Crab

Norway exported 47 tonnes of king crab worth NOK 28 million (approximately US$2.7 million) in January 2026, marking a steep downturn compared with the same month last year. Export value declined by NOK 97 million (US$9.2 million), a drop of 77 per cent, while volume fell by 71 per cent.

The largest markets were the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, but exports—particularly of frozen products—started the year weakly.

Only 6 tonnes of frozen king crab were exported in January, a decline of 92 per cent year on year. Export value fell dramatically from NOK 65 million (US$6.2 million) to just NOK 4 million (US$0.4 million).

“The USA, which dominated exports of frozen king crab in January last year, took almost no quantities this year. The reduced quota also means that available volumes are building up more slowly than normal and naturally contributes to lower exports in the first month of the year,” says Josefine Voraa, Head of Shellfish at the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Increased Supply of Alaskan King Crab

The sharp fall in exports to the US is also linked to increased availability of Alaskan king crab, zero import tariffs for US buyers, and heightened political uncertainty following warnings of potential tariff increases on Norwegian seafood.

Live king crab accounted for most of the January volume, totalling 41 tonnes, down 56 per cent from last year, with a value of NOK 24 million (US$2.3 million).

Average prices fell from NOK 637 per kg to NOK 587 per kg in Norwegian kroner, but increased from US$56 per kg to US$59 per kg in dollar terms.

Strong Start for Snow Crab

In contrast, snow crab exports recorded strong growth. Norway exported 507 tonnes worth NOK 78 million (US$7.4 million) in January, an increase of NOK 35 million (US$3.3 million), or 83 per cent, compared with the same month last year. Export volume rose by 140 per cent.

The largest markets were the United States, the Netherlands, and Canada.

“The increase is largely due to the fact that there was more snow crab available this year than at the same time last year,” says Josefine Voraa.

Despite higher volumes, prices declined. The average price of frozen snow crab fell from NOK 200 per kg to NOK 153 per kg, a decrease of 24 per cent in Norwegian kroner and 13 per cent in US dollar terms.

Customs Duties Dampen Demand

“The price drop is related to the fact that there is more snow crab in stock in the USA this year than at the same time last year. In addition, Norway now faces a 15 per cent import duty, compared with zero duty last year. This dampens demand for imported goods and affects market distribution,” explains Voraa.

Uncertainty around tariffs also reshaped trade flows. While 93 per cent of snow crab exports went to the US in January last year, the share fell to 38 per cent this year. At the same time, shipments to the Netherlands increased, reflecting its role as a hub for onward exports to the US or Asia.

Sharp Decline for Cold-Water Prawns

Norway exported 436 tonnes of prawns worth NOK 49 million (US$4.7 million) in January, down NOK 68 million (US$6.5 million), or 58 per cent, from last year. Export volume dropped by 74 per cent.

The largest markets were Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Finland.

The prawn fishing season has yet to fully start, and frozen raw material stocks are lower than at the same time last year.

“This has resulted in a decline in prawn export volumes in the first month of the year compared with a strong January last year,” says Josefine Voraa, Head of Shellfish at the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Frozen Products Hit Hardest

The steepest decline was seen in frozen products. Exports of frozen raw and frozen cooked prawns plunged from 684 tonnes last year to just 14 tonnes in January 2026.

Frozen peeled prawns, the most important product group, fell 60 per cent in volume to 364 tonnes. Export value dropped 50 per cent to NOK 40 million (US$3.8 million), while prices rose from NOK 88 per kg to NOK 110 per kg, an increase of 24 per cent

“Several product groups show the same pattern, with low volumes and increased prices. The overall price level for Norwegian prawn products rose by 62 per cent, reflecting lower supply and higher raw material costs,” concludes Josefine Voraa.

出口额从NOK 6,500万(US$620万)骤降至NOK 400万(US$40万)

Josefine Voraa

Josefine Voraa
