Argentine Fishery Exports: Contrasting Bimonthly Performance
ARGENTINA
Friday, March 28, 2025, 00:10 (GMT + 9)
Argentine fishery exports recorded a modest increase of 3.3% in the first two months of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. However, this growth is almost entirely attributable to the performance of Illex squid, in contrast to significant declines in other key products.
The commercialization of whole shrimp experienced a 30% decrease in volume, accompanied by a reduction in price. Hake fillets also maintain a downward trend, according to the Revista Puerto report.

The export report prepared by CAPECA, based on INDEC data, reveals a mixed picture for the sector. While Illex squid shows positive performance, with increases in volume and price, other products such as hake fillets and whole shrimp face difficulties.
Hake Hubbsi: Challenges in Key Markets
Exports of common hake fillets decreased by 9% in volume, and despite a 4.5% reduction in price, total revenue fell by 13%. In Brazil, the main market, sales plummeted by more than 20%, even with a nearly 8% price reduction. In Spain, the second most important market, the decline was 2.7%, although the price showed a slight improvement of 1.7%. In total, 8,567 tons were exported at an average price of $3,158 per ton.

Frozen H&G hake also experienced a 19.4% drop in demand, although a 12% increase in price limited the reduction in total revenue to 9.6%. 4,850 tons were exported at an average price of $1,681 per ton. The decrease in demand from Russia, now the main market, contributed significantly to this decline.
Shrimp: Unfavorable Outlook for Whole Product
Whole shrimp recorded the most unfavorable figures, with a 31% drop in demand and a 1.6% drop in price, which brought the average price to $5,060 per ton. Total revenue decreased by 32%. In Spain, the main market, demand decreased by 39%, despite a 7% price reduction. Other markets such as China also showed a significant reduction in demand.

The monthly price analysis shows that the price of whole shrimp reached $5,058 per ton at the end of February, a level comparable to 2024. Although a recovery was observed in the Russian and Italian markets, there were no sales to France.

Shrimp tails showed better performance, with a 1.5% increase in demand and a 0.5% increase in price, generating a 2% increase in total revenue. 15,825 tons were exported at an average price of $7,369 per ton. The United States, a high value-added market, showed a 10.3% increase in demand, with average prices of $11,597 per ton.
Illex Squid: The Growth Driver
Illex squid was the only product with positive performance, with a 16% increase in sales and a 10.4% increase in average price, which reached $2,682 per ton. Total revenue increased by 28%. 42,117 tons were exported, with China as the main market, absorbing more than 65% of the total. Other important markets were Thailand, South Korea, and Spain.
