Moderate Blue Whiting Week in the West as Herring Prepare to Spawn in the North

Strong Consumer Demand for Blue Whiting While Northern Herring Move Toward the Seabed for Spawning

The past week delivered a moderate level of activity in the blue whiting fishery in western waters, while in the north Norwegian spring-spawning herring (NVG herring) appear to be settling toward the seabed ahead of spawning. Meanwhile, smaller fisheries for Baltic sprat and horse mackerel reported limited but notable catches.

Blue Whiting: 29,100 Tonnes Landed from 19 Vessels

A total of 19 vessels reported catches of 29,100 tonnes of blue whiting during the week. The best fishing day was Tuesday, when 11,800 tonnes were landed.

Catch sizes varied significantly, ranging from 200 tonnes for the smallest haul to 2,420 tonnes, the largest catch of the week, taken by the vessel “Havskjær.”

Fishing activity was concentrated in three main areas:

  • International waters outside the 200-nautical-mile limit, where 5,600 tonnes were caught. Fishermen reported smaller fish in this area last week, and the last vessel left the area and entered the EU zone on Thursday.

  • The EU zone along the western edge of the Porcupine Bank, where a group of vessels operated along the slope.

  • The northern edge of the same bank, where another fleet targeted the species.

On Friday, the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries increased EU-zone fishing quotas for vessels holding blue whiting permits as well as pelagic/North Sea trawl licenses.

Of the week’s total catch, 5,100 tonnes were sold for human consumption, primarily to buyers in Killybegs, Ireland. Demand for blue whiting for food use has been strong throughout the winter, with 34,500 tonnes sold for consumption so far this year.

To date, 162,000 tonnes of the Norwegian blue whiting quota of 239,000 tonnes have been harvested, and more than 30 vessels have already completed their quotas. As a result, lower weekly catch volumes are expected in the coming weeks.

Traditionally, fishing continues in the EU zone until late March, before shifting to Faroese waters in April. Norwegian vessels are not permitted to fish blue whiting in British waters.

NVG Herring: 4,500 Tonnes Caught as Spawning Nears

Fishing for Norwegian spring-spawning herring (NVG herring) remained limited, with six vessels landing a combined 4,500 tonnes during the week.

The catch distribution was as follows:

  • 2,100 tonnes from two Danish vessels

  • 1,400 tonnes from three vessels in the Norwegian coastal fleet

  • 1,000 tonnes from the purse seiner “Harvest.”

Fishing took place in two main areas:

  • West of Sandnessjøen, where Norwegian vessels used purse seines. Herring in this area had average weights between 275 and 303 grams.

  • Outside the 12-nautical-mile limit, where Danish vessels used pelagic trawls, operating in recent days off Røst. Fish in this area were slightly smaller, averaging 254–265 grams.

Fishermen report that the roe content has reached around 20%, and several buyers say the roe has recently matured, making it ideal for roe pressing.

According to fishermen’s observations, the herring have now moved down toward the seabed to spawn, meaning Norwegian vessels are unlikely to record further catches in the immediate period.

So far this winter, Norwegian vessels have caught 157,000 tonnes of their 343,000-tonne quota. In addition, foreign vessels have contributed another 57,000 tonnes, bringing the total to 214,000 tonnessignificantly higher than last year’s total of 113,000 tonnes.

Baltic Sprat: Danish Vessel Lands 2,000 Tonnes

The Danish vessel “Themis” reported a catch of 2,000 tonnes of sprat taken southeast of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. The catch was sold for fishmeal and fish oil production.

So far this winter, two vessels have reported a combined 10,000 tonnes of sprat from the same area.

Horse Mackerel: Single Catch Reported Near Bergen

Only one catch was reported in the horse mackerel fishery, totaling 13 tonnes.

The fish were caught in fjords north of Bergen, and the catch consisted of large fish with an average weight of 500 grams.
