Global Seafood Trade: China’s Aquatic Imports Surge While Exports Hold Steady in 2025

Strong import growth and shifting international demand reshape China’s seafood trade landscape

BEIJING — China’s trade in aquatic products showed mixed trends in 2025, with imports expanding significantly while exports remained largely stable despite monthly fluctuations, according to official statistics from China Customs reported by Food World.

Exports: Stable Annual Performance Despite December Dip

China exported US$1.9 billion worth of aquatic products and related items in December 2025, representing a 9.1% year-on-year decline, even as export volume rose 2.1% to 441,700 tons.

For the January–December 2025 period, China’s cumulative exports reached US$20.17 billion, showing no overall change year-on-year, while export volume climbed 7.8% to 4,504,700 tons.

Top Export Markets

During the first 12 months of 2025, China’s top ten export destinations for aquatic products were:

  • Japan

  • United States

  • South Korea

  • Malaysia

  • Hong Kong

  • Thailand

  • Taiwan

  • Mexico

  • Spain

  • Canada

Together, these markets accounted for 65.3% of China’s total aquatic product exports.

Japan remained the largest export destination, with shipments reaching US$3.57 billion, reflecting a 3.6% increase year-on-year.

However, exports to Japan in December alone totaled US$220 million, a 11.4% decline compared with the same month in 2024.

Imports: Robust Growth Driven by Global Supply Partners

China’s imports of aquatic products showed strong growth in December 2025, reaching US$2.23 billion, a 15.6% year-on-year increase, while import volume rose 1.9% to 479,700 tons.

Across the full January–December 2025 period, China imported US$20.71 billion worth of aquatic products and derivatives — an 11.5% increase compared with 2024.

Total import volume reached 4.8578 million tons, marking a 0.5% increase year-on-year.

Top Import Suppliers

China’s top ten suppliers of aquatic products in 2025 were:

  • Russia

  • Ecuador

  • Vietnam

  • Norway

  • India

  • Indonesia

  • United States

  • Canada

  • Peru

  • Australia

These countries collectively represented 73.4% of China’s total aquatic imports.

Russia remained the largest supplier, with exports to China totaling US$3.22 billion, an increase of 17.4% year-on-year.

In December 2025, imports from Russia surged to US$390 million, representing a sharp 60.0% increase compared with December 2024.

Overall, the data highlights China’s growing dependence on international seafood suppliers even as it maintains a steady global export presence, reflecting evolving consumption patterns and supply dynamics in the global seafood market.
