Congalsa moves to secure upstream supply as €16m Nam Dinh company strengthens industrial division

Spanish seafood group Congalsa has formalised the acquisition of 100% of Vietnamese processor Lenger Seafoods Vietnam (LS Vietnam), in a move designed to consolidate its international presence in Asia and reinforce its industrial division.

The target company is headquartered in Nam Dinh, Vietnam, and specialises in the processing and export of clams and other seafood products. The transaction marks a further step in Congalsa’s long-term strategy of vertical integration and supply chain control in key raw material regions.

However, the deal remains subject to regulatory clearance. The operation is currently pending the necessary approvals from the relevant Vietnamese authorities and other stakeholders involved, and will not become effective until those authorisations are formally granted.

A €16 million processor with more than 200 employees

LS Vietnam is recognised for its strong commitment to sustainability, traceability and production excellence — areas of growing importance for European buyers. The company generates annual revenues of more than €16 million and employs a workforce exceeding 200 people.

For Congalsa, headquartered in Galicia, Spain, the acquisition represents more than geographic expansion. A specialist in frozen seafood and prepared products ranging from shellfish to ready-to-cook meals, the Spanish firm is seeking greater control over upstream processing capacity in one of the world’s most important clam-producing nations.

By bringing LS Vietnam’s operations under its ownership, Congalsa aims to oversee activities from raw material procurement through to primary processing. The move is expected to mitigate exposure to raw material price volatility while improving oversight of quality standards, delivery schedules and traceability systems.

Following completion, the group plans to introduce enhanced quality management procedures and align production processes fully with European Union regulatory requirements, particularly in relation to food safety certification and compliance monitoring.

Vietnam’s strategic importance in global clam supply

Vietnam ranks among the leading global exporters of clams and bivalves, supported by abundant natural resources and a mature aquaculture infrastructure. Its frozen and pre-cooked clam products maintain stable demand across the European Union, where competitive pricing and reliable volumes have secured a firm market position.

European seafood processors have faced mounting challenges in recent years, including unpredictable raw material costs, logistical disruption and supply uncertainty. Direct investment in producing regions — particularly in Southeast Asia — has therefore emerged as a strategic response to safeguard supply and strengthen bargaining power.

Management at Congalsa indicated that future growth will continue to focus on international market expansion and product diversification. Asia, combining cost efficiency with resource availability, has been identified as a priority region within the group’s long-term development plans.

Industry shift towards capital-led integration

The acquisition also reflects a broader structural shift within the seafood processing industry. Rather than relying solely on procurement contracts, European companies are increasingly securing upstream assets through mergers and acquisitions in order to reduce risk exposure and enhance operational resilience.

At the same time, global consumption patterns in bivalve shellfish are evolving. Rising health-conscious eating trends have driven stronger retail and foodservice demand for clams and related products. Growth in pre-cooked, ready-to-eat and semi-prepared formats is encouraging processors to establish more flexible production systems closer to source.

For seafood companies in Galicia — long regarded as one of Europe’s principal processing hubs — extending industrial capacity into Asia enables the combination of European branding and technical expertise with Asian production efficiency.

Against that backdrop, Congalsa’s planned acquisition of LS Vietnam represents a calculated step towards anchoring European sales channels more firmly to Asian production capacity within a controlled and diversified global framework.

As integration progresses, the Spanish group is expected to strengthen its position in the clam and broader shellfish segment, leveraging Asian industrial capability and European distribution networks to support its next phase of growth.

Congalsa

€16 million

200 people
