Strong demand in China offsets sharp decline in exports to the United States

NORWAY – Norway exported 97,463 tonnes of salmon worth approximately US$973.6 million in February, marking continued growth in the country’s key seafood sector. The export value increased by NOK 458 million (about US$47.6 million), or 5 percent, compared with the same month last year, while export volumes rose by 10 percent.

According to export data, the largest markets for Norwegian salmon during the month were Poland, China, and France.

China recorded the strongest growth in value. Norwegian salmon exports to the Chinese market increased by NOK 570 million (about US$59.3 million), representing a 107 percent rise compared with February last year.

At the same time, exports to the United States experienced the steepest decline. The value of shipments to the U.S. dropped by NOK 339 million (about US$35.1 million), a decrease of 34 percent year-on-year.

“Exports of fresh fillets to the USA saw the biggest decline. This must be seen in the light of customs duties, increased uncertainty about future trade conditions, increased competition from other producer nations and a weakened US dollar," says Paul T. Aandahl, seafood analyst of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Chinese New Year Boosts Salmon Demand

Norwegian salmon shipments to China totaled 11,512 tonnes in February, representing a 126 percent increase compared with the same month last year.

“The Chinese New Year celebrations follow the lunar calendar and this year fell in mid-February. Significant volumes of salmon were shipped to China ahead of the holiday," says Sigmund Bjørgo, the Norwegian Seafood Council's envoy to China.

"The distribution of salmon has improved in China over the past year, which has increased availability. Norwegian salmon can now be purchased in more stores, on social media and in neighbourhood shops and can be delivered to customers' homes within half an hour. In addition, gift packs of salmon were a major driver of the huge growth in Chinese salmon consumption during this year's Chinese New Year celebrations," Bjørgo explains.

Trout Exports Show Weak Performance

While salmon exports expanded, trout exports from Norway declined significantly during the same period.

In February, Norway exported 4,557 tonnes of trout valued at NOK 446 million (about US$46.3 million).

This represented a drop of NOK 117 million (around US$12.1 million), or 21 percent, compared with February last year, while export volumes fell by 23 percent.

The main markets for Norwegian trout during the month were the United States, Ukraine, and Thailand.

Despite the overall decline, the United States posted the strongest value growth among trout markets. Export value to the U.S. increased by NOK 11 million (approximately US$1.1 million), or 14 percent, compared with the same month last year. Export volume to the U.S. reached 729 tonnes, 17 percent higher than in February last year.
