Monday, March 09, 2026, 05:00 (GMT + 9)

Strong demand from China and steady purchases from the U.S. and Europe drive continued growth

Ecuador’s white shrimp industry began 2026 with strong momentum, as export volumes continued the upward trend established in 2025. According to recent trade data, the country exported approximately 129,000 tons of shrimp in January 2026, representing a 23% year-on-year increase.

Industry analysts attribute this growth primarily to the rebound in demand from the Chinese market, while purchases from the United States and Europe remained relatively stable. The strong start to the year suggests the sector could maintain positive momentum throughout 2026 if major consumer markets continue to recover.

China strengthens its position as Ecuador’s top shrimp market

China remained the largest destination for Ecuadorian shrimp exports in January 2026. Shipments to the Chinese market reached approximately 69,100 tons, marking a 33% increase year-on-year and accounting for more than half of Ecuador’s total shrimp exports for the month.

Industry observers note that China’s recovering seafood consumption and processing demand continue to play a central role in driving Ecuador’s export expansion.

U.S. demand shows slight decline but remains key market

Exports to the United States totaled around 21,500 tons in January 2026, representing a 6% year-on-year decrease. Despite the modest drop, the U.S. remains Ecuador’s second-largest shrimp market, accounting for roughly 17% of total exports.

Trade data suggests that U.S. importers adopted a more cautious purchasing strategy at the start of the year, reflecting inventory adjustments and market uncertainty.

European markets maintain stable demand

The European market continued to demonstrate steady purchasing capacity, with several countries maintaining consistent import volumes.

  • Exports to Spain reached approximately 6,600 tons, down 11% year-on-year.

  • Shipments to France totaled about 3,200 tons, showing a slight increase compared with the previous year.

  • Exports to Italy amounted to roughly 2,700 tons, also reflecting year-on-year growth.

Overall, Europe remains an important component of Ecuador’s export structure, providing stable demand across multiple markets.

Other Asian markets post strong growth

Beyond China, several Asian markets recorded notable increases in shrimp imports from Ecuador:

  • Vietnam: Exports to Vietnam reached approximately 2,300 tons, up more than 50% year-on-year, largely driven by demand from Vietnam’s seafood processing industry for re-export markets
  • Japan: around 2,100 tons, a 40% increase

  • South Korea: about 1,500 tons, also showing year-on-year growth

Industry experts say these gains are driven by regional consumption growth and re-export processing demand, particularly in Vietnam.

Mexico emerges as fastest-growing market in Latin America

Demand in Latin America also strengthened. Mexico imported approximately 1,100 tons of Ecuadorian shrimp in January, marking a year-on-year surge of more than 130%.

Market analysts highlight Mexico as one of the fastest-growing regional markets, with import volumes expanding rapidly due to increased domestic consumption and supply diversification.

China remains central to Ecuador’s export outlook

The recovery of the Chinese market continues to be the core driver of Ecuador’s shrimp industry. After reaching a record export level in 2025, Ecuador’s shrimp sector entered 2026 with sustained growth momentum.

With global seafood demand gradually recovering and key markets maintaining steady procurement, Ecuador’s shrimp exports remain highly active, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s leading shrimp exporters.
