Uncertain start for northern squid: uneven yields and expectations for the season

Click on the flag for more information about Argentina ARGENTINA
Friday, April 10, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

The opening north of 44° S shows uneven catches while a key scientific campaign seeks to determine the true state of the resource

The fishing season for Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) began with mixed signals following the official authorization north of the 44° South Latitude parallel on Monday, April 6. Although prior reports indicated improvements in the size and weight of specimens, the first 48 hours of activity revealed erratic behavior of the resource and uneven yields for the jigging fleet.

The decision to open the fishery was made after the survey conducted between March 27 and the start of the week by the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP), which had detected favorable biological conditions: a higher proportion of developed individuals and a lower presence of immature specimens.

However, the operational start was not uniform. During the first day, vessels reported low catch volumes and a predominance of small sizes, particularly as the fleet repositioned from the south. It was only by the night of Tuesday, April 7 that improvements in yields began to be observed, although with strong variations depending on the fishing area.

The current outlook reflects uncertainty. Vessel owners and crews agree that the squid’s behavior at this early stage is unstable, forcing them to wait several days to identify a clear trend that would allow for more precise seasonal planning.

Science in parallel: key to understanding the resource

At the same time as commercial activity, on Tuesday, April 7, the research vessel “Víctor Angelescu” set sail, launching a 26-day scientific campaign focused on evaluating the bonaerense–northern Patagonian stock.

This study is considered strategic for the fishing sector, as it will allow:

  • Confirmation of distribution and concentration areas of the stock.
  • Estimation of biomass and abundance using the swept-area method.
  • Detection of the presence of juveniles from the spring spawning stock.
  • Analysis of environmental variables such as temperature and salinity, essential to understanding the dynamics of the resource.

Additionally, biological samples will be collected to study population characteristics, maturity stages, and the composition of the ichthyofaunal community in the region.

A noteworthy point is that, for the second consecutive year, the INIDEP has managed to carry out both the southern and northern evaluation campaigns, consolidating a research series that began in 1996, essential for the historical monitoring of the resource.

Expectations in the sector

While science advances in diagnosing the situation, the fleet remains cautious. The erratic behavior of the squid in the early days requires constant monitoring and flexible operational decisions.

The immediate challenge will be to determine whether the improvements observed on the second day consolidate or whether the initial instability will set the tone for a season that is just beginning.
