Rising raw material costs and fierce competition squeeze margins, but disciplined cost control keeps the company in the black

The FF Group closed 2025 with a net profit of $3.7 million (converted from 26 million kroner), a steep decline from the $14.5 million recorded in 2024, as intensifying competition and surging raw material prices weighed heavily on performance.

Speaking after the results, Chairman Odd Eliasen acknowledged that the challenges had been anticipated but proved difficult to avoid.

“– We predicted that 2025 would be a tough year in terms of competition, and that prediction unfortunately turned out to be true,” he said.

The company had already warned during its previous general meeting that competition for raw materials was becoming increasingly aggressive, pushing prices to levels considered economically unsustainable.

CEO Johannes Palsson emphasized that despite the difficult environment, the company managed to protect its cost base.

“– There is no doubt that 2025 was a very demanding year, where our competitors were very aggressive in terms of prices. For the same reason, we are also very satisfied that, with a focused effort on our costs, we have managed to keep the cost level intact despite wage increases and general increases in costs, so that this factor has contributed positively to the overall result,” he said.

Further insight came from CFO Lars Leer, who highlighted the imbalance between input costs and output value.

“– If you convert the sales price of flour and oil to production value per kg of raw material, the value has decreased from 2024 to 2025, while the raw material price has increased. This disparity is a consequence of the fierce competition for the raw material in 2025, and with all this in mind, we must remember that it is positive that we end up with black numbers on the bottom line,” he explained.

Despite the pressure on margins, one bright spot for the group was its subsidiary Scandic Pelagics, which reported a profit of $2.5 million (converted from 17 million DKK) after tax—an increase of approximately $0.44 million compared to the previous year.

“– Scandic Pelagic is experiencing positive financial development and has succeeded in increasing its results compared to 2024 despite lower raw material supplies. We can only be very satisfied with that,” added Johannes Palsson.

Overall, while profitability declined significantly, FF Group demonstrated resilience in a turbulent market, maintaining positive earnings through disciplined cost management and operational efficiency.
