The Federal Fisheries Council resolved last week to process the request of the Chamber of the Yellow Fleet of Chubut (CAFACh) to authorize the fishery of the species 'Engraulis anchoíta'. It will take place between parallels 42° and 44° South.
In mid-May, the Chamber of the Yellow Fleet of Chubut sent a note to the Federal Fisheries Council to analyze a request for authorization to carry out anchovy fishing operations in the AVPJM, within the framework of what is regulated by Resolution CFP No. 1/2022.
The Rawson freshwater fleet asked the national body to authorize, as in previous years, the fishery of the Engraulis anchoíta species in the Permanent Closed Area for Juvenile Hake (AVPJM).
In this sense, it was taken into consideration that, in past seasons, before a similar query, INIDEP has stated that it does not have biological or scientific elements to discourage commercial vessels from operating on pelagic species with mid-water trawls and in daytime hours, in the aforementioned area, and that similar operations have been authorized from 2020 to 2022.
Unanimously, the Federal Fisheries Council resolved, last week, to enable the operation of the freshwater fleet for the exclusive capture of anchovy in the AVPJM, between parallels 42° and 44° South latitude.

The authorization was subject to certain conditions, such as the use of media water network; operate only during daylight hours and declare the intention to fish for anchovy before starting the tide, so that the exclusive existence of pelagic fishing gear can be verified on board.
On the other hand, they are required to give notice at the time the vessel is about to enter the closed area for the exclusive capture of the species. Another requirement is to communicate, at least 24 hours in advance, the date and port in which the unloading will take place, so that the exclusive capture of said species can be corroborated.
The Federal Fisheries Council resolved in the authorization of anchovy fishing that the shipowner has the obligation to embark a scientific observer on board, in accordance with the availability of INIDEP. Failing that, a DNCyFP Inspector or available provincial observers may be embarked.

In low shrimp season, anchovy fishing is one of the alternatives that allows a certain level of port activity and in the Rawson stowage. The raw material is later taken, mainly, to Mar del Plata, where there are companies that are dedicated to the processing and packaging of anchovy.
In Chubut, different investments were made for anchovy processing, although most of what is caught continues to be processed in Mar del Plata, due to cost issues.
