How a new era of eco-tourism and cultural pride is breathing fresh vitality into the historic fishing communities of Kisumu

In Kisumu's Dunga Beach on the shoreline of Lake Victoria in Kenya , the day begins before the sun even rises. It is a place where morning clouds drift lazily over horizons that seem endless and where human life remains deeply intertwined with the water and sky. As both tourists and locals gather at daybreak, the first light slowly reveals a searing energy. Wooden boats, anchored shoulder-to-shoulder, rise and fall to the tunes of the tide, almost as if the lake is breathing.

Here, fishing is more than an economic activity; it is a culture, identity, and living inheritance passed from one generation to the next. At this landing site located just  5 kilometers  from the central business district of  Kenya’s  third-largest city, entire communities revolve around the catching, drying, selling, and feasting of fish, mainly  Nile perch  and  tilapia .

"See that dock over there?"  gestures  Lillian Ochieng' , a long-time fish trader from the region. Her gaze sweeps across a cluster of small canoes returning from night expeditions, their silhouettes cutting through the mist like returning ghosts of the water. She pauses, a faint smile crossing her face, as though balancing years of memory against the weight of the present moment.

"My grandmother stood on this same shore," she said softly. "She learned how to smoke fish here, my mother learned how to sell fish here and it is now my turn. We laugh, we argue, we survive … and we come back again tomorrow … this is part of our lives."

The soft creaking of timber, the distant calls of fishers, and the gentle slap of water against wooden hulls blend into a rhythm that belongs to the shores of Lake Victoria , which is second in size only to North America’s Lake Superior among the world’s freshwater lakes.

Sprawling across roughly 68,800 square kilometers , this vital water resource shared between Kenya , Uganda , and Tanzania delivers breathtakingly consistent sunrises and sunsets. These moments are so serene and spectacular that they seem to pause the world in quiet admiration. In that gentle surrender, time itself appears to loosen its grip—until the watch on your wrist feels unnecessary—as if the lake has its own way of reminding you that some moments are not meant to be measured, only lived.

A dazzling dawn reshapes the living heritage of Kenya's iconic waterfront district.

How can ecotourism and cultural pride inject new vitality into the long-standing fishing community of Jisumu?

On Kisumudunga Beach , on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya , life begins before sunrise. Here, the morning clouds drift lazily across the seemingly endless horizon, and human life is deeply intertwined with the water and sky. As tourists and locals gather at dawn, the first rays of sunlight slowly reveal a vibrant and fiery energy. Wooden boats anchored side by side rise and fall with the rhythm of the tides, as if the lake itself is breathing.

Here, fishing is not just an economic activity, but a culture, an identity, and a living heritage passed down through generations. At this landing point, just 5 kilometers from the central business district of Kenya's third-largest city , the entire community revolves around catching, drying, selling, and enjoying fish, primarily Nile perch and tilapia .

“See that dock over there?” Lillian Ochine, a seasoned fishmonger in the area, gestured. Her gaze swept over a group of small canoes returning from a night expedition, their silhouettes piercing the mist like ghosts returning from the water. She paused, a faint smile playing on her lips, as if searching for a balance between the weight of years of memories and the present moment.

“My grandmother once stood on the same beach,” she said softly. “She learned to smoke fish here, my mother learned to sell fish here, and now it’s my turn. We laugh, we argue, we survive… and then we’ll come back tomorrow… that’s part of our life.”

The soft creaking of the wood, the distant shouts of fishermen, and the gentle lapping of the lake water against the wooden hulls blend together to create a rhythm unique to the shores of Lake Victoria , the world's second largest freshwater lake after Lake Superior in North America .

This vital water resource, shared by Kenya , Uganda , and Tanzania, spans approximately 68,800 square kilometers and offers breathtakingly beautiful and consistently stunning sunrises and sunsets. Those moments are so serene and magnificent that the world seems to pause in silent awe. In that gentle relinquishment, time itself seems to relinquish its control—until the watch on your wrist becomes superfluous—as if the lake is reminding you, in its unique way, that some moments shouldn't be measured, but simply experienced.
