Brazilian Seafood Exports Face New Threat as Proposed US Tariff Targets Key Industries
BRAZIL
Friday, June 05, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)
A proposed 25% US tariff on Brazilian imports could jeopardize more than one-fifth of Brazil’s exports to its largest seafood market, raising concerns across the country’s aquaculture and fish farming industries.
The Brazilian seafood sector is bracing for potential disruption after the United States proposed imposing an additional 25% tariff on a range of Brazilian products, a move that could significantly impact exports of fish and crustaceans to one of Brazil’s most important international markets.

According to information released by Márcio Elias Rosa, Brazil’s Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC), approximately 21% of Brazilian exports destined for the United States would be directly exposed to the proposed tariff measure.
Among the sectors identified as most vulnerable are industrial machinery and equipment, plastic products, footwear, wood products, cardboard, cast iron, as well as fish and crustaceans.
"The sectors most affected would be those of machinery and equipment, which have added value. And it brings a lot of damage to employment, income, and industries," he stated.
Aquaculture Industry on Alert
The inclusion of fish and crustaceans among the sectors facing higher trade barriers has sparked concern throughout Brazil’s aquaculture industry, particularly because the United States remains the principal destination for Brazilian seafood exports.
In recent years, exports of Brazilian tilapia have expanded steadily in the North American market, encouraging investments in processing facilities, quality certification programs, and export capacity expansion.
Industry participants fear that the introduction of an additional 25% tariff could increase costs for US importers, making Brazilian seafood less competitive against rival suppliers from other countries. The measure comes shortly after the removal of a previous 50% tariff, creating fresh uncertainty for exporters seeking to strengthen their presence in the US market.
Impact Across the Supply Chain
Beyond exporters, the proposed tariff could affect the broader seafood production chain, including processing plants, cooperatives, integrated production companies, and fish farmers supplying raw materials for export.

The potential loss of competitiveness could have economic consequences for employment and income generation in regions heavily dependent on aquaculture production.
Negotiations Continue Between Brazil and the United States
The tariff proposal forms part of a report published by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and has not yet been finalized.
According to the MDIC, Brazilian authorities remain engaged in ongoing discussions with US officials in an effort to avoid the implementation of the measure.

Since a meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and President Donald Trump, the two countries have held at least four formal meetings involving representatives of the USTR, alongside several technical negotiation rounds.
Uncertainty Remains for Exporters
While negotiations continue, exporters across multiple sectors are closely monitoring developments. If approved, the tariff could weaken the position of Brazilian products in one of their most strategic export destinations.
For the seafood industry in particular, the proposed measure threatens to undermine recent gains achieved in the US market, potentially affecting future investments and growth prospects for Brazil’s rapidly expanding aquaculture sector.
