In a strategic move to tackle the growing demand for sustainable seafood, Fishway and Multus Biotechnology have announced a partnership to accelerate the development of cost-effective, cultivated fish. The collaboration combines Fishway's expertise in fish cell line development with Multus' AI-driven platform for optimizing growth media, aiming for price parity with traditional seafood.

Two innovative companies, Fishway and Multus Biotechnology, have forged a strategic partnership designed to revolutionize seafood production by developing scalable and cost-effective cultivated fish. This collaboration marks a significant step towards addressing the global seafood shortfall and fostering more sustainable food systems.

The alliance brings together distinct yet complementary expertise. Fishway specializes in the critical area of fish cell line development, while Multus Biotechnology, a UK-based startup founded in 2020 by Imperial College London researchers, contributes its AI-driven platform for optimizing growth media. Both companies share the ambitious goal of accelerating the availability of cultivated seafood to a global market.

Fishway's innovative approach to cultivated fish begins by obtaining a small tissue sample from a fish, from which stem cells are carefully isolated. These foundational cells are then nurtured in a precisely optimized environment, provided with the ideal conditions and nutrients to encourage rapid proliferation.Make click on the image to enlarge it.

Making Cultivated Fish a Viable Commodity

A core objective of this partnership is to overcome the current challenges in scaling up cultivated fish production to achieve price parity with conventional fish. "We’re very pleased to be working with Fishway. Between Fishway’s expertise in fish cell lines and Multus’ AI-enabled rapid optimisation platform, we’re excited to see what this partnership can do for reaching price parity," stated a Multus spokesperson.

This collaboration will enable the companies to custom-design highly scalable growth media specifically for cultivated fish, a crucial factor in driving down production costs and making cultivated seafood a commercially viable commodity.

From Cell to Fillet: Fishway's Innovative Approach

Fishway focuses on developing biomass from fish cells that precisely mimics the nutritional profile and texture of traditional fish fillets. Their process begins with tissue samples from fish, from which stem cells are isolated. These cells are then nurtured under controlled conditions to multiply rapidly within large bioreactors. Once the biomass reaches sufficient growth, it can be harvested and utilized in a variety of food applications.

AI Meets Seafood: Multus's Pioneering Technology

Multus's strength lies in its specialization in developing animal-free cell culture media. The company leverages artificial intelligence and automation to meticulously optimize media formulations. This advanced approach aims to significantly reduce costs and enhance scalability, not just for cultivated fish but across the broader cultivated meat production sector.

Recently, Multus launched a food-grade basal media that employs AI to identify ingredients from the existing food industry. These ingredients can effectively replace those traditionally used in biopharmaceutical production, providing all the essential nutrients required for robust cell growth in a cost-effective manner.

Cai Linton, the CEO of Multus, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. "We’re thrilled the word is out! Huge shoutout to the Multus team and to Cai for your visionary leadership. We’re confident this partnership will echo across the cultivated fish ecosystem. Excited for what lies ahead as we take bold steps toward scalable, sustainable seafood."

This partnership represents a significant investment in the future of sustainable seafood, promising to bring innovative solutions to consumers worldwide.
