The Japanese capital's wholesale markets commercialized 24,596 metric tons in June. Price increases for fresh fish, frozen items, and shellfish elevated turnover to JPY 40,494 million (USD 256 million).

Tokyo’s central wholesale markets closed June with 24,595.7 metric tons of seafood products commercialized, down 1.5% from May and 1.1% below the same month in 2025. However, transaction value increased to JPY 40,494 million—around USD 256 million—according to new statistics from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Turnover grew 0.7% month-on-month and 6% year-on-year, while the average value for the entire market reached JPY 1,646/kg (USD 10.42/kg). This benchmark increased 2.2% compared to May and 7.2% compared to June last year, demonstrating that the market generated higher revenue with a slightly lower volume.

Fresh fish remained the largest category. Its sales totaled 9,896.9 metric tons, valued at JPY 16,087 million (USD 101.8 million). Volume declined 3.4% month-on-month, but exceeded June 2025 figures by 2.7%. Turnover rose 11.2% year-on-year, driven by an 8.3% increase in average value to JPY 1,625/kg (USD 10.28/kg).

Among fresh items, domestic wild Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) stood out, generating JPY 2,717 million (USD 17.2 million) and becoming the highest-value reference in the statistics. Japanese horse mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) also performed strongly: its 1,032 metric tons represented a similar volume to the previous year, but its turnover surged 19.6% due to an 18.4% rise in average price.
Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) showed the opposite trend. Tokyo received 804 metric tons, up 65% year-on-year, while its average value dropped nearly 30% to JPY 755/kg (USD 4.78/kg). Greater availability allowed turnover to grow 15.7% despite the price drop.
Frozen seafood provided another major signal. Its volume increased 9.4% compared to May, reaching 5,125.9 metric tons, with turnover reaching JPY 9,141 million (USD 57.9 million). Compared to June 2025, the market moved 10.7% less frozen product, but its average value was 15.2% higher.

Frozen coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) led this category with 1,126 metric tons and JPY 1,643 million (USD 10.4 million). Compared to May, its volume grew 20.4% and its turnover 28.6%. High values were also recorded for frozen Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis), frozen bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus), and frozen Yesso scallop (Mizuhopecten yessoensis).

Shellfish reached a total of 1,568.6 metric tons and JPY 3,055 million (USD 19.3 million). Volume grew 6.5% year-on-year and turnover increased 10.2%. Although frozen scallop trading volume softened compared to May, its value remained 14.1% above figures from a year prior.

The statistics reflect a Tokyo market supported more by unit value than by volume growth. The most visible exception was skipjack tuna, whose increased supply pushed down the average price sharply, whereas fresh fish, tuna, shellfish, and frozen seafood maintained strong revenue.
