China Increases Aquatic Product Imports and Raises Export Volume with Lower Unit Value

Chinese seafood trade reflects greater reliance on external supplies and an increase in overseas shipments that does not translate into higher economic revenue.

The Chinese trade of aquatic products is undergoing a structural transformation characterized by accelerated dynamism in international purchases and greater pressure on the margins of its overseas sales. During the first half of 2026, China imported aquatic products and preparations for 121.3 billion dollars, a figure that represents an increase of 27.6% compared to the same period of the previous year. In terms of volume, imported volume reached 2.753 million metric tons, recording a year-on-year growth of 21.4%.

Top 10 export destinations of China's aquatic products and processed products in the first six months of 2026

The growth of foreign purchases broadly outpaced the pace of domestic exports. Russia consolidated its position as the main supplier to the Chinese market, reaching sales of 22.0 billion dollars, equivalent to a year-on-year increase of 55.5%. The list of the main origins of imports was completed by Ecuador, Vietnam, Norway, the United States, India, Indonesia, Canada, Peru, and Australia, countries that together concentrated 73.9% of total Chinese purchases.

Top 10 Sources of China's Imported Aquatic Products and Products in the First Six Months of 2026

On the export front, China marketed aquatic products abroad for 98.0 billion dollars, remaining stable compared to the previous year with a slight negative variation of 0.1%. However, exported volume grew by 5.5%, totaling 2.263 million metric tons. This disparity between physical volume and monetary value indicates a reduction in the average value per metric ton sold, suggesting greater pressure on prices, shifts in product mix, or a narrowing of commercial margins for local processors.

Japan remained the main destination for Chinese shipments with 17.5 billion dollars, despite recording a year-on-year decline of 4%. The top ten destination markets, which accounted for 63.2% of exports, included the United States, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Mexico, Germany, and Canada.

This scenario configures a dual impact for the global seafood industry. While the increase in imports offers commercial opportunities for international suppliers of fish, shrimp, cephalopods, and other aquatic products, the stagnation of export value against the rise in volume demonstrates intense price competition for the Chinese processing industry. This situation gains particular relevance in processing and re-export categories, where rising operational, energy, and logistical costs hinder business profitability. Likewise, the outlook coincides with new regulatory adjustments by the General Administration of Customs, which formalized recent quarantine and health requirements for edible aquatic animals from Thailand.
