Increased salmon volumes and widespread price rises drove sector revenues despite the strengthening of the Norwegian krone

Norway exported seafood worth NOK 15.6 billion (US$ 1.485 billion) in July. This represents an increase of NOK 1.8 billion (US$ 171.3 million), or 13 percent, compared to the same period last year.

"July was a strong month for Norwegian seafood exports. Salmon (Salmo salar) secured both higher export volumes and higher prices. Price increases for cod (Gadus morhua), mackerel (Scomber scombrus), and trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) also contributed positively. A stronger Norwegian krone has put a damper on value growth, but the strong growth for salmon overshadows this effect and ensures that the overall export value increases. In addition, the international attention surrounding Norway in connection with the World Cup helps to maintain interest in several important markets", says CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council, Christian Chramer.

"In addition to price increases for salmon, cod, mackerel, and trout, we noted record prices for cod fillets and frozen herring (Clupea harengus)", says Chramer.

The largest markets for Norwegian seafood exports in July were Poland, China, and the USA.

Poland had the largest value growth, with an increase in export value of NOK 343 million (US$ 32.6 million), or 20 percent, compared to the same month last year. Export volume to Poland ended at 31,484 tonnes, which is 13 percent higher than the same month last year.

China Consolidates Position as Norway's Second Largest Market

Seafood exports to China increased by 21 percent to NOK 1.6 billion (US$ 152.3 million) in July. Salmon accounted for 65 percent of this.

So far this year, Norway has exported 75,800 tonnes of salmon to China for NOK 5.6 billion (US$ 533.3 million). This corresponds to a value increase of 41 percent and a volume increase of 46 percent.

"China has consolidated its position as Norway’s second largest salmon market. The capacity in the Chinese salmon sashimi processing industry continues to increase, enabling further growth in domestic consumption of salmon. As of the first half of the year, Norway’s market share was 61 percent, up from 57 percent for the same period last year", says Chramer.

The US Ranks as Norway's Third Largest Market

– The export value to the US fell by only four percent, and the US thus retained its place as our third largest seafood export market in July. Fresh and frozen salmon fillets, which have been our largest products to the US market, continued to decline, while fresh whole salmon had a strong month, with an increase in export volume from 810 to 2,350 tonnes. Several factors may have contributed to the development. Among other things, good access to large Norwegian salmon suitable for sushi consumption may have played a role. There may also have been lower export volumes from competing countries, combined with solid demand in the market. Among other important species, we still saw a large decline in king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) and snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) in July, while trout increased somewhat, says Chramer.
