The authority will chair the 38th Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI38) in Rome, positioning the country at the forefront of multilateral policies on sustainability, ocean governance, and food security.

ROME — In a vote held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy, the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Chile, Osvaldo Urrutia Silva, was elected President of the 38th Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI38).

With this election, the Chilean official assumes the leadership of the world's premier intergovernmental forum dedicated to capture fisheries and aquaculture. Established in 1965 and comprised of more than 130 member countries, this body addresses and coordinates global policies aimed at the sustainable management of aquatic resources, marine ecosystem protection, ocean governance, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Strategic Leadership and Global Commitments

Following his appointment to lead COFI38, Undersecretary Osvaldo Urrutia Silva stated that it is an honor and an institutional responsibility to coordinate the sector's multilateral agenda at a pivotal moment.

The head of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) emphasized that complex challenges lie ahead, requiring coordinated international action to strike a proper balance between biological resource sustainability and ongoing fishing operations, thereby ensuring harvest levels that support global nutrition based on science and empirical knowledge.

Furthermore, Osvaldo Urrutia Silva highlighted that the fisheries debate must extend beyond catch volumes to adopt a comprehensive perspective focused on food security and social well-being. In this context, he stressed that seafood represents a vital source of high-quality protein whose responsible and sustainable supply contributes directly to global health.

Projection of Chilean Ocean Policy

Presiding over COFI38 provides Chile with a strategic platform to advance key priorities promoted in its international agenda.

Representatives from Subpesca underscored that the leadership of Undersecretary Osvaldo Urrutia Silva will reinforce the role of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), which are critical mechanisms for ensuring equitable and sustainable stewardship of high-seas resources and marine biodiversity conservation.
