AKVAFORSK (Institute of Aquaculture Research), AS, Norway, has been the leading research institutions in the world in developing selective breeding programmes for aquaculture species since the late 1960's. AKVAFORSK Genetics Center, AS (AFGC) was established in 1999 as a subsidiary of AKVAFORSK to pursue all commercial activities related to genetic improvement programmes. The AFGC, today owned by the National Centre for Veterinary Contract Research and Commercial Services (VESO), is the leading provider of applied genetic improvement services to aquaculture industries worldwide.
The company has access to research results and core competence in the field of selection and quantitative genetics in NOFIMA (formerly AKVAFORSK), and AFGC promotes further development of breeding programmes and related technology in biometry, quantitative genetics, molecular genetics, and reproduction. AFGC continues to improve its own competence by further developing its organization, operating systems, hiring outstanding personnel, and through collaboration with scientific partners.
AFGC is currently seeking additional investment and partners for developing an effective and efficient organisation, for safeguarding a broader incomebase, and to enhance its market activities worldwide.
