University of Newcastle upon Tyne is an institution of higher learning that emphasizes scientific research and educational studies. It has some 19,000 students and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in subjects including medicine, law, and agriculture.
Its academic structure has three main faculties: Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Faculty of Medical Sciences; and Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering. The school is one of the UK's largest civic universities and is closely tied to the economic and cultural life of the North East region. It traces its roots to the School of Medicine and Surgery, established in Newcastle in 1834, and to Armstrong College, founded in 1871.
