The Spanish company Albacora SA reached an agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on a significant reduction in the economic sanctions imposed for fisheries violations in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the United States in the Western and Central Pacific.
While initially the proposed sanction for its vessel Albacora Uno amounted to EUR 7.4 million, the company managed to reduce it to EUR 5 million, to be destined to the Western Pacific Sustainable Fisheries Fund.
The company also noted that, depending on the fulfilment of certain conditions, the amount of the penalty could be reduced to USD 4 million.
Albacora managers stressed that "in any case, it has been proved that no captures have been produced at any time (not even a single tuna) in waters which were prohibited from doing so."
The Spanish company acknowledged that its ship had dropped objects within 200 miles located around the Howard Baker Islands and Jarvis Islands in the central and western Pacific. But dismissed that its crew had captured tuna in waters where it was prohibited.
It also undertook to improve the monitoring programme of its fishing vessels.
The company also clarified that NOAA emphasised that the agreement is an example of responsibility, cooperation and transparency on the part of Albacora.
"Over the years, Albacora has shown a strict adherence to international guidelines on fisheries regulation. Compliance with this legislation is for the company, more than just a legal obligation, it is a genuine commitment as a company," Albacora said in a press release.
