New Automatic Pelagic Plant for The Faroe Islands

  (FAROE ISLANDS, 3/20/2012)

Vardin Pelagic in Tværoyri in The Faroe Islands has signed a contract with Skaginn for a pelagic fish processing plant.

The plant will be mostly automatic and have a capacity of 600 metric tons per day to begin with but an expansion is planned that will increase capacity up to 1000 metric tons per day.

The technology used in the plant has been developed in cooperation between Skaginn hf.,  Matís  and Icelandic pelagic plants. This technology saves manpower, energy and packaging.  Matís  has researched this technology and confirmed that it is both affordable and efficient.

Vardin Pelagic signs agreement with Skaginn

Skaginn hf. buys equipment for the plant from several suppliers, for example: Marel, Style Technology and Samhentir-kassagerð, to name a few. Skaginn hf. has subcontracted some parts of the infeeding system, cooling and buffering sections of the plant to 3X technology in Ísafjörður and SR-vélaverkstæði in Siglufjörður.

Vardin Pelagic also signed a contract with Frost for the plant's refrigeration freezing system. The refrigeration system that Kælismiðjan Frost delivers is the largest system that Frost has delivered to date.

Gudmundur Hannesson, Sales and Marketing manager at Frost says: “we have designed and adapted the refrigeration system especially for the automatic pelagic processing line delivered by Skaginn. We have delivered the refrigeration systems for all the big pelagic factories in Iceland and have worked on this development in cooperation with the Icelandic fishing industry and Skaginn over the past two decades”.

In addition to the plant Frost will install a refrigeration system for a new 20,000 m3 cold store.
