IFAPA and Cupimar seek to improve sole breeding techniques
(SPAIN, 10/13/2014)
Through the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Training and Research (IFAPA), the Andalusian Secretariat of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development has agreed with the company Cultivos Piscícolas Marinos (Cupimar) on the launch of a research and development project to improve aquaculture sole farming breeding.
The study, which will last two years, will focus on monitoring and improving egg-laying in sole, contributing to a major advance for scheduling and stabilization of the annual production of this species.
The second line of the project is the assessment of the reproductive success of captive-bred sole against the wild one.
The agreement was signed in the IFAPA centre 'El Toruño' of Santa María Port (Cádiz) by IFAPA President, Carmen Ortiz, and Cupimar general director, Eloise Millán.
IFAPA president stressed that this agreement favours the use and development, both at industrial and commercial level of the results obtained by this organism, namely IFAPA centre ‘El Toruño’, specializing in aquaculture research.
Ortiz also made a visit to the research centre of Cadiz and became interested in the works that have just started on site, funded by European funds FEDER for the construction of a new experimental container designed to work with larvae and juvenile specimens with recirculation circuits, leading technology in the aquaculture world.
Since the 80s Cupimar has been engaged in marine aquaculture development and is authorized to grow bream, sea bass, shrimp, sole, eel and other species of marshes, in ancient salt areas in the Natural Park of the Bay of Cadiz.
Breeding and fattening sole is an ambitious new project in which this company is immersed. To do this, it has modern facilities made specifically for this species, which supplies sole fingerlings supplied to its fattening facilities and positions it as a global leader in sole farming.
