New digital tool to estimate fish species maturity
(SPAIN, 4/8/2016)
The Undersecretary of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of the Government of Andalusia, through the Research and Agricultural-Fisheries Training Institute (IFAPA), presented a new tool to estimate the maturity status of several species to the professional fishing sector.
This is a digital tool that, by combining satellite data, estimates the maturity times or status of open sea stocks such as sardine, hard clam and coquina.
This new digital tool was developed within the European framework of the SAFI project (Support for Aquaculture and Fisheries Industry), in which the IFAPA Centre 'Agua del Pino' along with other public-private entities from France, Ireland and Portugal, and whose representatives met this week in Huelva.
IFAPA president, Jeronimo Perez, stressed that this type of European projects "involve optimal results from which the professional fishing industry directly benefit, as is the case with this new tool."
During the meeting held on Thursday, the experts made a pilot tool demonstration to potential interested users belonging to the fisheries and aquaculture sector from Andalusia and from other Spanish communities, and other countries where there may be final beneficiaries, namely Ireland, Greece and Italy.
The researchers explained that with few weeks in advance this new tool will make it possible to make reliable estimates for a zone and one species as to their sexual status, maturation status of a given population, the percentage of sexually mature specimens and when their breeding season will start, from the given values of environmental parameters such as temperature and phytoplankton abundance.
This tool aims to be a tool for the fisheries and aquaculture resource management, and it will be improved continuously depending on the demands and concerns of the related sectors.
Similarly, the products offered can continuously be adapted to data provided by new satellites that are launched for this purpose, as it is the case of the recent launch of Sentinel-3.
