IFAPA participates in cross-border project to improve bivalve mollusc stocks
(SPAIN, 6/26/2017)
Through its centres of Agua del Pino, in El Rompido (Cartaya, Huelva) and El Toruño (El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz), Instituto de Investigación y Formación Agraria y Pesquera de Andalucía (IFAPA) participates in the 'Aqua&Ambi' cross-border project with the goal of improving the natural populations of bivalve molluscs.
According to information from Andalusia autonomous government, this will be the orientation of its activity in an initiative that, carried out by a consortium coordinated by the Portuguese Institute of Marine Affairs and the Atmosphere (IPMA), seeks to achieve a more efficient management of the wetlands of the Coastal areas of the south-west Iberian region, based on the interaction between aquaculture and nature, on the conservation of coastal areas and on expanding the rehabilitated areas and their profitability.
'Aqua & Ambi', which brings together various public research organizations and companies related to the aquaculture sector of Huelva, Cadiz and the Portuguese Algarve, in particular seeks the optimization of ecologically sustainable aquaculture production systems by promoting the use of methods and environmentally friendly production systems in humid areas of the Natura 2000 Network, including the marshes of Huelva and Cadiz.
Within this framework, which will be extended until 2019, IFAPA Agua del Pino will test with new systems for fixing seeds, especially oysters, a species that, in addition to its great commercial interest, plays a fundamental role in the improvement of water quality in estuaries due to their high filtration capacity.
The centre from Huelva will complement the studies in the outside environment with experimental works in its facilities and will collaborate with several exploitations located in the marshes of Isla Cristina and Piedras for the implementation of pilot projects of development of oyster farming as of that of other bivalves.
All this, in a research context shared with entities such as the Portuguese Environment Agency, the Agrarian and Fisheries Management Agency of Andalusia, the University of Cadiz, the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Aquaculture Technological Centre of Andalusia (CTAQUA) or the Fund for the Custody and Recovery of the Salt Marsh (SALARTE).
