IFAPA presents aquaculture research progress

  (SPAIN, 9/30/2017)

Through the Institute of Agricultural and Fishing Research and Training (IFAPA), the Undersecretariat of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of Andalusia will present some of their progress in aquaculture research as diets and diseases in flatfish at the next XVI National Congress of Aquaculture. The event, which will take place from October 3-6 in Zaragoza, aims to generate and transmit knowledge in the field of marine farming and fishery resources.

Undersecretary of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development Rodrigo Sánchez Haro has highlighted the potential of IFAPA, the only public agricultural and fisheries research entity of the Andalusian Government that has two aquaculture research centres, one in IFAPA 'El Toruño' of El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) and IFAPA 'Agua del Pino' in Cartaya (Huelva). The researchers of the latter are in charge of presenting some of their latest projects in the XVI National Congress of Aquaculture in order to show the national scientific community part of its activity.

Researchers from IFAPA 'Agua del Pino' will present the project DietaPlus, whose objective is the research and development of functional diets that improve the health and well-being of farmed fish.

This work aims at designing feed for aquaculture intended to improve the health and well-being of the species being farmed through the use of additives that improve the response of fish to acute and chronic stress situations as well as the stimulation of the animal's immune system and the enhancement of the mucosal (gills, skin and gut) defenses.

In addition, they will present two other studies on stress alleviation in the croaker by experimental feed.

Afrovib research project, which shows that the parasitic pinnotherid crab (Afropinnotheres monodi) has negative effects on mussels from aquaculture, will also be discussed.

The analysis, co-financed with European funds Feder, studies the wild and farmed populations of these mollusks of the South Atlantic coast and has shown a high prevalence of this crustacean in the natural populations of the coast of Huelva and the bay of Cadiz as well as the loss of the mussels affected by this crab. Fortunately, this parasite has not yet been detected in farmed fish and in storages that are qualified for it (rafts and long lines).

Another communication, the result of the work developed in the pathology laboratory of IFAPA 'Agua del Pino' center, exposes the identification and virulence of a bacterial species (Winogradskyella sediminis strains) that have been described for the first time associated with a fish disease, specifically to external injuries of mallet farmed with aquaculture reproduction techniques.

To complete the congress, a researcher from the centre will moderate the scientific session on molluscs and crustaceans and will be part of the jury that will award prizes to the best posters of the participating researchers.
